Cabinet considers position of State Agency on Energy Efficiency on renewable energy sources and strategy

According to Serhiy Dubovik, Deputy Chairman of State Agency on Energy Efficiency, in updating the Ukraine’s Energy Strategy till 2030, the Cabinet has taken into account a proposal of State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine to increase by 11% the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in energy generation by 2020. Thus, Ukraine is following the European principles of energy efficiency and sustainability of natural resources, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.
“Now, we can see that energy strategy includes the dynamics that exists today Our wishes have been fully taken into account,” Dubovik said.
The energy strategy approved by the government envisions that, by 2020, the rated capacity of RES power plants must reach 12,000 MW. Out of the, 6,800 MW will be generated by large hydropower plants (HPP), and the rest – by small hydro, wind, biomass, biogas, and solar energy plants.
Experts note that average annual growth of RES power plant capacity (other than large hydropower plants) is forecasted as 500-700 MW by 2020 (other than hydropower).
Extending utilization of renewable energy is one of the most important areas in energy policy of Ukraine aimed to reduce the energy dependence, to save the traditional energy resources, and to improve the environment.
Crimea is one of the most successful regions in the area of implementing the strategy of energy independence with one-third of consumed energy obtained from the sun and wind.
