Expert: Hryvnia fluctuates thanks to Maidan

Current sharp fluctuations in hryvnia rate are the “merit” of political protests, president of the Ukrainian Analytical Center Oleksandr Okhrymenko told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.
He said that in the period of 3 January 2010 – 29 November 2013, hryvnia devaluation was only 2.2%. “It’s quite insignificant index. Despite all the talks about the problems and defaults, the national currency exchange rate fluctuated insignificantly, in normal limits, since 2010. The ordinary Ukrainians did not feel substantial hryvnia devaluation, because retail prices increased just slightly,” the economist said.
He stressed that when the Maidan began to frighten citizens and destroy the economy of Ukraine by its actions, especially by seizure of state buildings and riots, it immediately affected the dollar exchange rate. “For two months of protests, to pressure on hryvnia exchange rate was significantly higher than for almost 4 years of stability. And now the Ukrainians have to say a big “thank you” to all the protests and protesters,” the analyst said.
However, Okhrymenko noted that the National Bank still keeps the situation under control.
