State support to fruit, grape and hop growing grew 7-fold

In 2014, state support to horticulture, viniculture and hop growing increased 7-fold, to 700 million UAH, compared to the amount budgeted in 2013, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, funds committed for 2014 can be used by the farmers for laying out new orchards and vineyards, caring for them, construction of modern storage facilities, purchase of necessary equipment, etc. In turn, this will help increase fruit and berry production, their export and domestic consumption.
“In recent years, due to the government support programs for Ukrainian fruit growing, the industry is reviving. In the last three years there was a tendency of intensification of horticulture due to increasing intensive modern plantations that are replacing the old extensive ones,” Olexandr Yareschenko, Deputy Director for Research of the Horticulture Institute NAAS said.
According him, Horticulture Development Program 2025 aims to continue this positive trend, thus its aim was to intensify production using organic growing techniques.
In recent years, the government pays great attention to the development of horticulture. Due to government support programs, fruit and berries production has grown today, as well as the acreage, exports, and domestic consumption. Thus, according to the relevant Ministry, total production of fruits and berries grew by 14% in 2013, to 2.296 million tons, and grapes – by 26%, to 575,400 tons.
Experts say 51% of fruit plantations in Ukraine today are apples, and accordingly, the main crop of industrial production is apple, it accounts to 87%. Currently, about 255,000 hectares of land are under the fruit plantings.
Over the past five years, the apple market in Ukraine has grown by 15%. At the same time foreign supplies are falling. Thus, according to analysts of Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, in the first 5 months of 2013, Ukraine’s apple imports fell by 42.3% (35,300 tons) year-to-year.
