FM: Authorities to raise public awareness of European integration

The Cabinet of Ministers should strengthen awareness of the citizens of Ukraine of the European Union. Such opinion was expressed by acting director of the European Union department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Volodymyr Bachinsky during the international conference “Free Trade Area between Ukraine and the EU: Challenges and Opportunities”.
“The Government has adopted a relevant concept of informing the public on European integration for the period up to 2017. A week ago, the government approved an action plan on the subject. I want to note that we are working closely with the EU representatives, who understand the importance of this issue,” Bachinsky said.
He noted that so far insufficient number of Ukrainian citizens supports European integration.
“As recent polls show, European integration enjoys support of about 50 % of citizens. In our opinion, this is not enough,” the representative of the department said.
At the same time, he said that studies show that 77 % of Ukrainian citizens have never traveled abroad.

EU commissioner: Association with Ukraine profitable for EU

EU commissioner: Association with Ukraine profitable for EU

The Association Agreement with Ukraine is profitable for the European Union, as it will open the mutual access to commodity markets, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs said at the economic conference in Essen (Germany), ForUm correspondent reports.
According to the official, signing is profitable both for Kyiv and Brussels. “The economic benefits are clear: EU has just begun to emerge from the crisis. In this situation, our goods need expansion of sales, and your goods also will benefit from access to our vast market. After all, its capacity is about 10 times higher than that of Ukrainian,” the Commissioner said.
He added that the Association Agreement with Kyiv, the signing of which is scheduled for November, is also profitable for Russia, because it can be a step towards creating a large free trade area (FTA) with the participation of the Russian Federation. “The agreement does not prevent Ukraine from developing constructive relations with the Customs Union and supporting free trade with the CIS countries, as well as deepening and expanding them to the extent that it meets the WTO rules and is not contrary to the mutual obligations with Brussels,” Piebalgs said.

The Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine received an official letter from the Russian Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) on resolution of the situation with the supply of Roshen products to the Russian market.
This was stated by deputy agrarian policy and food minister Ivan Bisiuk before the Government’s meeting.
“We have received an official letter from the Rospotrebnadzor on how we will address this question. It will be addressed in three ways. First, we have provided information about each processing plant, which produces these products today. We have provided the legislative framework regulating this issue. And now we wait for the Rospotrebnadzor to send its inspectors to verify these enterprises,” the deputy minister said.
However, he did not dare predict when the question of the products supply to the Russian Federation Roshen is settled.
“I hope that this will happen in the near future,” Bisiuk concluded.

Arbuzov: China increases investments in Ukrainian economy

Negotiations with the Chinese government and financial institutions representatives touched upon the expansion of the agricultural sector funding, the port infrastructure development, as well as cooperation in the industrial sector (particularly in the aircraft and aerospace industries).
“We would like to increase the loan we raised last year from the Chinese side on the development of the agricultural sector. We intend to organize not only the growing of products, but also a high level of exports, the organization of the ports in our country – we will be able not only to grow but also to export. Today, we are not able to export all that we grow in the amounts in which we would like to,” first vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Serhiy Arbuzov told reporters, summing up preliminary results of his visit to China.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that Ukraine will be able to increase exports to this country to equalize the balance of bilateral trade between Ukraine and China.
“With the implementation of projects in key sectors for cooperation, Ukraine will improve the balance of trade with China, reducing it to zero. We need to organize the work so that imports from China do not exceed our exports to that country,” the first vice PM said.
Arbuzov reminded that Ukraine and China have a long list of joint projects in many industries.
“Strategic directions are agriculture, aviation, space industry, science, culture, and medicine. Each of them was discussed,” first vice Prime Minister added.

U.S. expert: Ukraine is very attractive market for China

U.S. expert: Ukraine is very attractive market for China

China is a major importer of food. Ukraine should take advantage of this and increase the exports of its agricultural production to China, professor of international economics at Harvard University Richard Cooper told BTB TV channel.
“Businesses around the world are interested in cooperation with China, because it is a big market that includes 1.3 billion people. So it is an ideal place for the export of Ukrainian goods. In particular, China is a major importer of food that should especially attracts Ukraine,” he said.
In addition, according to the expert, Ukraine may also increase the coal exports to China.
Richard Cooper noted that 30 years ago China was a poor country, but today more and more people in the country become richer, and their earnings increase.
“So China thinks about the purchase of different product groups. This makes China extremely attractive to many American, Japanese, Korean and European companies that want to sell products to the Chinese consumers, whose well-being is growing,” he concluded.
