Ukraine's envoy to EU: European integration is irreversible

Ukraine’s envoy to EU: European integration is irreversible

President’s adviser on integration and foreign policy and envoy to the European Union Konstantyn Yeliseyev believes that despite ultimatums and pressure, the process of European integration of Ukraine is irreversible.
“I want to state and confirm that regardless of various ultimatums, check-ups and nervous reactions, the Association agreement between Ukraine and the EU will be signed in November. The integration process is irreversible,” he said during a sitting of EP committee on foreign affairs, dedicated to Ukrainian-Russian relations.
The ambassador underlined that Ukraine is determined to fulfils its part of the tasks, necessary for signing of the Association agreement. At the same time, according to Yeliseyev, Ukraine needs EU support regarding current situation on Ukrainian-Russian relations. In particular, Ukraine needs European structures to support the signing of the Association agreement and to explain the benefits of it for all three sides, Ukraine, the EU and Russia.
“The EU can facilitate access to its market for several Ukrainian products, meeting European standards,” he said and added that at the same time Ukraine intended to seek constructive and compromise solution of Ukrainian-Russia trade dispute. For this, a  governmental delegation left for Moscow on August 26.
However, after the talks, Sergey Glasiyov, adviser of Russian President, declared that if Ukraine signed the Association agreement it would no longer be a strategic partner of Russia and would lose the status of legal entity under international law, Yeliseyev informed.

Füle: Association with EU not to prevent Ukraine from developing relations with Russia

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement will not be concluded owing to cessation of Ukraine’s relations with Russia or other neighbors. This was stated by European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle after talks with secretary of the national Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Andriy Kliuyev.
European Commissioner once again described the position of the EU regarding the fact that any external pressure on Ukraine, associated with its desire to sign the Association Agreement with the EU, is unacceptable.
Füle added that the Association Agreement does not prevent Ukraine from developing a constructive relationship with the Eurasian Customs Union to the extent to which these relations are based on the principles of the World Trade Organization, and is not contrary to the principles of a deep and comprehensive free trade area between the EU and Ukraine.

European Parliament: Russia's actions against Ukraine contrary to rules

European Parliament: Russia’s actions against Ukraine contrary to rules

The European Parliament believes that the current behavior of Russia against Ukraine in the field of trade does not correspond to the norms of international law and is unacceptable. This was stated by head of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs Elmar Brok (Germany) following a special committee meeting on the situation in Ukraine.
“Russia is using its capabilities (in terms of pressure on Ukraine in the sphere of trade – Ed.) contrary to international law, which defines the sovereign right of each country to take its decision. Signing of the Association Agreement with the EU is a matter of Kyiv, not Moscow or Brussels. Therefore, such behavior of Russia is unacceptable,” the MEP said.
He said that the position of Russia regarding energy prices and in the sphere of customs policy is directed at forcing Ukraine not to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union in November at the summit of “Eastern Partnership” in Vilnius.
Brok added that the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs at its session today called on the European Commission and the EU Member States to clearly define its position on the actions of Russia in current situation with Ukraine, in particular, at the G20 summit, which will be held next week in St. Petersburg.
In addition, Brok informed that the European Parliament is also planning to adopt a resolution that would express its own position on trade relations between Ukraine and Russia.
