Expert: Changes in standardization system to open EU markets for Ukraine

Expert: Changes in standardization system to open EU markets for Ukraine

For Ukrainian goods to freely enter the EU market after the signing of the Association Agreement and the FTA agreement, the country should change the requirements for standardization. This was stated by the president of the Ukrainian Analytical Center Oleksandr Okhrymenko.
“One of the biggest challenges facing Ukraine in the European integration process is the transformation of our system of standards. The current system of standards in Ukraine differs from the European in many ways, which leads to the fact that Ukraine can not sell a lot of goods to the EU before they will not be tested by European officials. However, this does not guarantee that our products will enter the EU,” the expert continues.
According to him, a draft law of Ukraine on standardization, prepared by the government, is to bring our system in line with the European model for the further economic integration of Ukraine into the world economy. Today, according to Okhrymenko, the export of any goods from Ukraine to the EU requires a separate agreement, because our standards do not meet the European standards.
At the same time, he agrees with the view that a change in Ukrainian standardization system will cause “inconsistencies” with the standards adopted in the Customs Union, which may lead to new difficulties in trade with it. However, the expert believes that bringing Ukrainian standards in line with European will allow our producers more actively explore the world markets through fundamental improvement of product quality.
