Epidemiologists: No swine flu epidemics in Ukraine

Epidemiologists do not rule out return of virus strain A (H1N1), more commonly known as swine flu, to Ukraine. However, there is no threat of an outbreak and reasons to worry, the KCSA press service informs, citing report of the Gromashevsky Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases of Ukraine.

However, according to doctors, the new epidemic season 2012-2013 will be characterized with a compatible circulation of influenza A (H3N2), namely a new strain called Victoria, which has not yet revealed its epidemiological characteristics in our country, and new for Ukraine strain of influenza virus (WI).

Doctors say that preparation for the epidemic season requires public vigilance and timely vaccination, rapid detection of the disease, isolation of patients and their effective treatment.
 
“People with chronic diseases (respiratory and cardiovascular systems, kidney, metabolism), people aged over 60, pregnant women, and those who are in contact with a lot of people are under threat,” the report says.

Physicians remind that the main symptoms of influenza is a sudden fever, cough (usually dry), headache, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, severe malaise, runny nose.

Number of Crimea visitors in off-season increases

The tourist flow in Crimea in the off-season increased in 2012, deputy resorts and tourism minister of Crimea Mykola Marinov said at the staff meeting of the Council of Ministers of Crimea on January 8, the Council of Ministers of Crimea press service informs.

Thus, according to him, number of visitors of spring Crimea increased by 17.2% than in the same period of 2011. Increase in tourist flow in the autumn of last year was 18.4%.

Overall, in 2012, 6 million 134 thousand tourists, which is 8.1% more than in 2011, visited Crimea.

Parliament tells what Ukrainians complain about

During the eleventh session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the sixth convocation, more than 230 citizens visited the reception of Parliament, department for complaints of citizens of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine reports.
The receptions were held according to the schedule of personal enrollment of citizens by the heads of parliamentary committees and factions, which is approved by order of the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine each session.
During the session, 234 people visited 32 private receptions, and 256 complaints, including 213 written and 43 oral, were received.
During September-December of 2012, primarily socially unprotected groups of citizens, including 159 pensioners, 22 unemployed, 51 disabled people of I-III groups, 22 war veterans, 20 disabled veterans, 18 war children and six large families, addressed the chairmen of parliamentary committees and factions to protect and help them.
All written applications received during personal receptions were considered and discussed in the secretariats of parliamentary committees and factions. According to the results of personal meetings, the appropriate instructions were given and sent to the relevant bodies of state executive power and local governments.

State secret disclosure case against Melnychenko sent for additional investigation, says PGO

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (PGO) has cancelled an indictment in the criminal case against former State Guard Department Major Mykola Melnychenko on the disclosure of a state secret and sent the case for additional investigation, Interfax informs.
The PGO informed that its investigator carried out the procedure as part of the supervision over the investigation into the case conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine.
At the same time, the PGO did not specify the reason for which the case was sent for additional investigation, but said it assumed that there could be the necessity to conduct some additional investigatory procedures in the case.

UN praises Ukraine’s help to Syrians

Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomes the Ukraine’s allocation of one million hryvnia intended for humanitarian assistance to refugees from Syria.
“The Ukrainian authorities have allocated one million hryvnia to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to help Syrians. Ukraine first acted as a donor state,” the UN News Center says.
UNHCR Regional Representative Mr. Oldrich Andrysek noted that is no longer just a recipient of international aid, but for the first time joined the ranks of donor States to assist refugees.
According to the UN data, more than half a million Syrian refugees were registered or awaiting registration in the four neighboring countries.
“Their number is climbing by more than 3,000 per day. About 25,000 Syrians are also seeking asylum in the EU Member States,” the report says.
Mr. Andrysek noted that he is aware of several hundred persons in Ukraine and Moldova who have approached the authorities asking to be granted permission to remain.
UNHCR trusts that those who have good reasons not to return to the conflict area will be granted the protection they deserve and will not be forced to return or to seek safety elsewhere.
Since the beginning of 2011, 266 Syrians have applied for asylum in Ukraine. The asylum-seekers come from different regions of Syria, but most tend to originate from Aleppo and Damascus.

President Viktor Yanukovych has submitted a draft resolution to the Verkhovna Rada on the dismissal of Serhiy Arbuzov from his position as a head of the National Bank, the press service of the Parliament reports.
Representative of the head of state, MP from the Party of Regions Yuri Miroshnychenko will announce the relevant draft decree from December 24 in the session hall of the Parliament.

Naftogaz pays Gazprom for December gas

The National JSC Naftogaz Ukrainy transferred on January 4 around $618 million to Russian gas OJSC Gazprom as payment for natural gas imported to Ukraine in December 2012, Naftogaz said on Tuesday.
The gas import price for Naftogaz Ukrainy in the first quarter of 2012 totaled around $416 per 1,000 cubic meters, second quarter – around $425 per 1,000 cubic meters, third quarter – around $426 per 1,000 cubic meters, and in fourth quarter – around $430 per 1,000 cubic meters.
According to Ukraine’s State Statistics Service, imports of Russian gas to the country in 2011 totaled 40.0017 bcm in 2011 at a value of $12.361 billion.

In the next few days, Ukraine will observe fluctuations in air temperature and insignificant precipitations, director of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center Mykola Kulbida told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.
“We expect the precipitation intensity in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, where 5 -10 mm of snow will drop. The significant precipitations are not expected in other regions,” the expert said.
According to him, tomorrow, on January 9, moderate snowfall will be in the eastern regions and Crimea. Kulbida noted that the temperature will drop.
He also said that during January 10-11, the precipitation will fall on the whole territory of Ukraine.
According to the director of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, on January 14-15, there will be cold weather, and the temperature will be -13-19 at night and -6-12 during the day, but on January 16-18, we will expect the next increase in temperature, which may continue till Epiphany.
