Ukrainian male population suffers from benign prostatic hyperplasia

One of the reasons of high disease rate among Ukrainian men is poor care of health, chief urologist of Healthcare Ministry and urology department head of Bohomolets University Serhiy Pasechnyk told a press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.

“Following the demographic situation of Ukraine, male population is in the minority (54% – women, 46% – men). According to United Nations World Population Ageing Report, by 2047 old people will outnumber children on a global scale, which will lead to the increase of percentage of old men,” he noted.

Pasechnyk also added that reduction of Ukraine’s population and world tendency of population aging influence the health indicators of citizens. “Aging means increased spread of age-associated diseases. As for male population, the matter concerns benign prostatic hyperplasia. 30% of men over 46 have this disease with florid symptoms,” the doctor informed.

According to him, the number of patients with this disease gradually increases with every passing year. Thus, in 2011, there were 1115 cases registered per 100 thousand of population, and the total number of such patients countrywide was 1.5 million. Every second patient with this pathology undergoes surgical treatment, Pasechnyk reported.

According to him, economic situation also influences health indicators, as such treatment is pretty expensive.

ACU forces bakery companies to cut bread prices

The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine urges manufacturers of bakery products to reduce prices on their own, without waiting for the verdict of the Committee, deputy director of market research department of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine Yuri Prokopenko told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to the officials, the PJSC Kyivkhlib unreasonably increased the bread price. The prime cost of Ukrayinsky and the Kyivsky kinds of bread included overprice of ingredients, which led to the unjustified price increase.
“Thus, the company overestimated the flour volume, contrary to the formulation of appropriate bread kinds. In addition, the yeast, oil and salt prices were well above the market average. All this has led to an overstatement of cost prices,” the expert said.
He added that according to the preliminary data, the wholesale prices have been already reduced by 14-15 kopecks per unit. “The Committee strongly recommends that this and other bakery products manufacturers reduce costs on their own, not waiting for our verdict,” Prokopenko said.

In addition, according to her, in 2011, girls aged from 15 to 17 had more than two thousand abortions, and seven thousand chose to give birth.
Kolomeichuk also noted that now there is a sharp decline in a number of abortions among young girls in general, but this trend stays the same among girls of 14-16 years old.
