There are more suicides in Ukrainian rural areas than in urban

Rural people commit suicides more often in Ukraine, the chief child psychiatrist of the Health Ministry of Ukraine Ihor Martsenkovsky said during a teleconference bridge Kyiv-Moscow-Yerevan-Chisinau-Astana, as ForUm correspondent reports.

“A map of suicides coincides with a map of a high level of alcohol abuse. This problem must be solved systemically,” Martsenovsky said.

He also suggested the school psychologists to work with children more. “Teenagers do not disclose their thoughts to parents and teachers. Teachers often do not realize what happens with children. In turn, teenagers communicate with their peers. We need to teach schoolchildren the principles of proper behavior. Such practice has been successfully introduced in the UK. But in our schools the psychologists do everything except their direct duty – psychological help towards children,” he said.

Azarov: FTA within CIS to increase trade turnover between Ukraine and CIS by 35%

Entry into force of the CIS free trade area agreement will provide an opportunity to increase trade turnover between Ukraine and the countries of the Commonwealth by 35%, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said in Parliament on Monday.

“After agreement enters into force, the volume of trade turnover between Ukraine and the CIS countries is expected to increase by more than threefold – by 35%, and this will also contribute to the growth of GDP of the country,”  Azarov said, ForUm learned from the Cabinet’s press office.

He stressed that Ukraine will considerably benefit from the introducing of the FTA within the CIS. In particular, according to the Prime Minister, the provisions of the contract are based on the forms and rules of the WTO and clearly state all the interstate export-import duties. “It was agreed not to expand these lists and not to increase the duty rate,” the head of government said.
Azarov stressed that all trade disputes within the CIS from now on shall be solved under the WTO procedures and mechanisms.

The Prime Minister emphasized that there is a provision relating to the hydrocarbons transportation through trunk pipelines, which provides for the development and adoption of a separate agreement within six months after the date of the entry into force of the treaty. “We already instructed the Energy and Coal Industry Ministry along with other executive authorities to prepare a draft agreement,” Azarov summed up.

Men commit suicide more often than women do

Men commit suicide more often than women, the director of the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Gevorg Poghosyan said during a teleconference bridge Kyiv-Moscow-Yerevan-Chisinau-Astana, as ForUm correspondent reports.

“In the CIS countries men commit six-seven suicide attempts out of 10 attempts. Basically, these are men older 30 years. The reason is difficult socio-economic situation. The economic crisis has influenced it a lot. According to the statistics, people usually commit suicide during the day, the period of social activity, rather than at night. The suicide attempts are less in number in hot countries, than in cold,” Poghosyan said.

“Except extremely private reasons, there are common socio-economic factors that influence the growing trend of suicides. In addition to emergency services and proper lessons at schools, the government support and the solidarity are very important either. The more social support there is the less suicide cases occur. Only 30% of attempts out of all end in death, so the attempts to commit suicide are actually 3 times more than official figures show us,” he said.
