Crimea to develop alternative power production

Crimean government supports the development of alternative power system in the region, Crimean PM Anatoly Mohyliov told a briefing on Thursday.

Crimea has necessary natural, climatic and land resources to develop solar and wind power. “Solar and wind resources are inexhaustible, and Crimea is one of the sunniest regions of Ukraine. Capacities of thermal power plants is not enough for Crimea, hence the development of alternative power production is a priority task,” the official said.

The Crimean PM also noted that the necessity to develop alternative power production is conditioned by the price rise for energy carriers in the world and by the disadvantageous gas contract with Russia.

In addition, Mohyliov noted, the development of any production, including power, allows creating new jobs for Crimean residents and filling budgets of all levels.

The council of ministers of Crimea is ready to assist investors in realization of projects on development of alternative power production, the PM summed up.

Lviv council banned Nazi and Communist symbols

Deputies of the Lviv city council banned on April 26 the use of USSR symbols, communist and Nazi symbols on the territory of Lviv. 74 deputies voted in favour of the decision.

The resolution says that the matter concerns the symbols of “no longer existing state USSR,” communist and Nazi symbols, used during mass events or hung out on buildings. Author of the resolution, deputy Yuri Mikhalchishin noted that “we must take a stron-willed decision and to declare European position.”

He also reminded that last year deputies of the council took similar decision, but it was appealed by the prosecutor’s office.

On June 17, 2011 the Constitutional Court of Ukraine issued a decision, according to which the use of Victory Flag during official events together with the State flag of Ukraine contradicts the Constitution.

Ukraine to reduce its dependence on Russian gas with the help of three various options

Ukraine to reduce its dependence on Russian gas with the help of three various options

The process of reduction of Ukraine’s dependence on Russian gas will be carried out in three directions, energy and coal minister Yuri Boiko said after the meeting on energy security, ForUm correspondent reports.

“If to name by priority, the first one is the increase of domestic gas production. This year we plan to extract 250 million cu m of gas from Black Sea shelf, and by the end of 2014 we plant to provide Crimea with gas of only domestic production – three billion cu m per year. The second direction is the replacement with coal. Already today we no longer use gas to produce electricity. The third one is diversification of gas supplies. I believe that in the nearest future we will have certainty on this issue,” the minister informed.

Speaking about diversification of gas supplies, Boiko also noted that the government would soon announce a tender on construction of liquefied gas terminal on the Black Sea coast.
