Ukrainian youth group stages anti-Tymoshenko performance

A group of young Ukrainians has staged a performance mocking jailed ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in front of the labor camp in eastern Ukraine where she is being held, RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service reports.

The Young Regions group said its performance of “The Narration About Golden Gas for Ukrainian People” on January 17 was dedicated to the third anniversary of the 2009 Ukrainian-Russian agreements on gas supplies which Tymoshenko signed on behalf of Ukraine.

Young Regions positions itself as a youth wing of the ruling Party of Regions led by President Viktor Yanukovych and it blames Tymoshenko for signing a disadvantageous deal with Moscow.

Patriarch Filaret: I was tied with KGB as everybody else

Head of Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchy, Patriarch Filaret confirmed in an interview with Weekly.ua that he was tied with KGB.

According to the Patriarch, all hierarchs without exception were tied with the Committee of state security of former USSR. “In USSR times nobody could become a hierarch without consent of KGB. Hence all those accusations of my connection to KGB are true. I was tied, as everybody else, without exceptions,” he said.

“You should take into account the fact that in the Soviet totalitarian state everything was under control of KGB. I had to agree my activity with the state. For example, a hierarch did not have a right to nominate or appoint a priest without consent of KGB,” Patriarch Filaret told and added he had no ranks, and attempts to persuade him into cooperation had no result.

“They knew I would never agree to sneak on my brothers. They always knew and know now,” he summed up.

UEFA Secretary General: We had our doubts, but now we are impressed with Ukraine's stadiums

UEFA Secretary General: We had our doubts, but now we are impressed with Ukraine’s stadiums

UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino considers Olimpiyskiy NSC in Kyiv to be one of the most beautiful EURO 2012 stadiums, he said this while sharing his impressions with the press office of the stadium, ForUm learned from Ukraine-2012 Information Center.

“When I saw the upgraded stadium with my own eyes, my breath stopped and my tongue failed me. This is a perfect arena with a wonderful atmosphere. The changes that have taken place at the Olympic since the time of my most recent visit are impressive. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most beautiful stadiums for the final part of the championship, and the spectators who will come here in summer will convince themselves of this. Though the stadium is designated not exclusively for football and initially I had fears that athletic lanes would distance spectators from the field, one can presently get an impression that everything is beside. A wonderful roof, seats with national colours and comfortable changing rooms taken together make the stadium very special. This is the arena of the highest European level,” the UEFA general secretary said.

According to Infantino, despite external doubts of UEFA representatives that construction and reconstruction of Ukrainian stadiums would be completed in due time, everyone believed that Ukraine would cope with this task.

“We got confidence in Ukraine back in April 2007 when UEFA had chosen it together with Poland as hosts of the EURO 2012 championship. Of course, there were moments of doubt since then, but I was already convinced at that time that the 2012 championship would be held precisely here. We presently see the proof of this,” the UEFA official emphasized.
