Barroso believes Ukrainians are not ready for European standards of life

Ukrainian society is not ready yet for European standards of life, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso told a press conference after the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv.

According to him, about 30 years are needed for Ukraine to adopt in full measure the European standards of life. “We are waiting for this with optimism,” Barroso said.

The official also noted that the EC welcomes the economic reforms in Ukraine, in particular the realization of the anti-corruption law. “Favorable economic development can be carried out only with the help of business and investment environment,” Barroso underlined.

EU to allot money for modernization of Ukrainian GTS

EU to allot money for modernization of Ukrainian GTS

The European Union is ready to render financial assistance in modernization of Ukrainian gas transportation system, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso told a joint press conference after the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv, ForUm correspondent reports.

“We are ready to render our assistance to Ukraine in modernization of GTS and to use financial institutes for this purpose. Ukraine joined the Energy society at the beginning of this year, and this is very important signal for its future,” he said.

At the same time Barroso expressed a hope for Ukrainian norms regulating energy market to be based on European principles.

Speaking about Russian-Ukrainian gas talks the head of the EC underlined: “I won’t interfere with relations between Ukraine and Russia, but I hope Europe will have gas in winter.”

President’s Administration: Association agreement to be signed in 2012

Head of the President’s Administration Serhiy Lyovochkin believes that the situation with former PM Yulia Tymoshenko will not affect the initialing of the Association agreement, he told journalists, ForUm correspondent reports.

“Tymoshenko herself will hardly interfere. We all heard that she supports the initialing and ratification of the document as soon as possible,” he noted.

Lyovochkin is convinced that the initialing of the Association agreement will happen in 2012. “This is a technical procedure, which provides for initialing of thousands of pages. This procedure is long and complicated, but after today’s tête-à-tête meeting you can read a phrase ‘as soon as possible’,” the official said.

Ukraine continues modernization of the gas transportation system with the assistance of the European Union, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych said during the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv.

“We continue modernization of Ukrainian GTS with support and financing of European institutes,” he said.

The head of state also pointed out the importance of Ukraine-EU cooperation on strengthening energy security.

President: Visa-free travel with EU remains one of Ukraine’s prioritie

Introduction of visa-free travel with the EU remains a priority for Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovych said during Ukraine-EU Summit in Kyiv.

“Our strategic goal is the introduction of visa-free travel with the EU and the key task at present stage is the implementation of the Action Plan to liberalize visa regulations for Ukraine,” he said.

The President drew attention to the successful conclusion of negotiations on amending the Visa Facilitation Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

According to Viktor Yanukovych, the expansion of human contacts and removal of barriers to free communication is an integral part of the process of further rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU.

EU calls upon Ukraine to hold transparent elections

The European Union welcomes the adoption of the new law on parliamentary elections, Presdient of the Council of the European Union Herman van Rompuy said during the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv, ForUm correspondent reports.

At the same time he underlined that the elections must be open to all candidates and must be in line with the values of Ukraine.

Van Rompuy pointed out that such summits give an opportunity to improve relations between Ukraine and the EU, as well as to agree upon priorities for the future. “But political certainty remains the key of the success,” he noted.

Ukraine and EU officially completed negotiations on Association agreement

The negotiations on Association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union are officially complete, President of the EU Council Herman van Rompuy announced during the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv, ForUm correspondent reports.

“We can publicly announce that the negotiations on association are finished,” he said adding this is a big step regarding the relations between Ukraine and the EU. “It has decisive meaning.

In his turn, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso declared that the visa free regime between Ukraine and the EU will be introduced as soon as required conditions are fulfilled.

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych noted that European society will not be complete without Ukraine. According to the President Ukraine understand the difficulties the EU is experiencing now. “In Ukraine we understand that the EU is experiencing difficult times, and as a result is very sensitive about further expansion. But the project of the united Europe will not be finished till such big counties as Ukraine are outside the union,” he said.

The President also pointed out that Ukraine is ready for accelerated preparation and signing of the Association agreement.
