FM Hryshchenko: Ukraine "definitely and consciously" decides to join Europe

Ukraine has “definitely and consciously” decided to join Europe, despite the pressure exerted on this process by “other interested parties”, Ukraine Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryshchenko told the German Handelsblatt newspaper.

“Ukraine is in a unique geopolitical position. Being a bridge between Europe and Russia, we are also a guarantor of peace and stability in the region. We attach great importance to friendly relations with all our neighbors. But we have definitely and consciously decided to join Europe, despite the pressure from other interested parties,” Hryshchenko said, UKRINFORM reports.

The diplomat also stressed that in an atmosphere of global uncertainty and complex political events Europe can not afford itself to turn its back on Ukraine.

Hryshchenko also added that Ukraine’s policy of European integration particularly strongly needs support from Germany. “Working together we will achieve a steady progress in our bilateral relations, issues of energy security and other reforms that in the future will enable Germany to back Ukraine’s membership in the EU,” the minister noted.

PM Azarov: Gas price of USD 440 not hampering GDP growth

PM Azarov: Gas price of USD 440 not hampering GDP growth

This year’s gas price for Ukraine at USD 440 per thousand cubic meters of Russian gas did not hamper the GDP increase of 5.3%, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said at a briefing on Thursday.

“They have repeatedly warned us that our currency will collapse, that we will have no funds to pay salaries and that our economy will not sustain the high price of gas. But this year we pay USD 440 per thousand cubic meters, taking into account the Kharkiv discount. We have survived, and at the end of the year we have GDP growth of 5.3% – one of the highest figures in Europe. GDP growth in Russia is lower and that in Poland is also lower,” Azarov said, UKRINFORM reported.

He also said he was convinced of the sustainable development of the Ukrainian economy with the gas price of over USD 400 per thousand cubic meters in 2012.

“The situation in our country is now pretty stable, and we have a firm position in our negotiations with Russia. So I said if the price is 416 dollars, we will pay it,” he said.

Azarov recalled that for one-and-a-half years, the Ukrainian authorities had been in talks with Russia on the revision of gas contracts of 2009. Azarov said he was sure that the contracts would be reviewed sooner or later, and Ukraine will receive an acceptable and fair gas price.

“I must say that Ukrainian authorities official avoid holding any talks on participation in our integration processes, and we see they follow the old path… – free trade area with the European Union,” he told a press conference ‘On perspectives of Eurasian integration of Ukraine’.

Ukrainian authorities also ignore consultations with the Customs Union or Russia regarding possible consequences of its free trade agreement with the EU, Glaziyev underlined.

“According to the agreement signed in St. Petersburg one month ago, in case of making agreements with the third part, especially with such big as the EU, the country is obliged to hold consultations with its partners. We cannot be indifferent to the condition of the FTA agreement between Ukraine and the EU. There are risks that this agreement can water down the free trade relations with the Customs Union or with other CIS counties, who signed that agreement,” the official said.
