40-meter high artificial Christmas tree to be installed in Kyiv center

For the first time, in accordance with the demand of ecologists of Ukraine, the Kyiv authorities will install 40-meter high artificial Christmas tree on Maydan square in Kyiv.

According to the deputy mayor of Kyiv Oleksandr Puzanov, the tree will be installed December 17.

“The artificial tree will weigh 50 tons, while the real one weighed 7 tons. Decorations will be new, though we don’t know yet of what kind. For sure there will be dragons, symbols of 2012,” the department said. In response to the question on a possibility for such heavy tree to fall down in metro, the officials assured they would calculate all the risks.

The preparation works to the New Year celebration include new methods of street illuminations jointly developed by domestic and foreign specialists. 

It is planned to organize performance of Ukrainians stars of show business, including Potap and Nastya Kamenski, Iryna Bilyk, Ani Lorak.

As for the New Year fair, the authorities intend to make it more civilized, without trays with sausages, sandwiches or doughnuts.

“This year authorities promised to install real Christmas tents, where people will be able to buy some souvenirs, to drink hot wine or hot chocolate or even to eat some chestnuts,” says the head of Kyiv council commission on culture and tourism Oleksandr Briginets.

The Kyiv city administration will not install any rides this year, as last year parents did not let their kids to swing being afraid for them to get sick because of cold metal constructions.

It is expected that the New Year celebration will be financed by sponsors.

Ukraine’s parliament decriminalized economic crimes

The parliament of Ukraine has adopted as a whole the presidential draft bill on humanization of responsibility for economic crimes with 268 votes under 226 necessary ones.

At the same time the MPs have not adopted any of various amendments on decriminalization of the article according to which Yulia Tymoshenko was processed and convicted. In particular, the MPs refused to withdraw the article from the Criminal Code or lighten punishment.

The MPs also failed to adopt the amendment submitted by the committee, which provides for cancellation of sentences for those, whose conviction has not come into force yet or release from the custody of those, who are serving the sentence in accordance with the articles, which have been just decriminalize by the parliament. Only six MPs supported the given amendment.

Chornobyl disaster liquidators capture pension fund premises in Kharkiv, demanding payment of pensions

Five hundred participants in the mitigation of the Chornobyl accident aftermath occupied this morning the assembly hall of the regional administration of the Pension Fund in Kharkiv, UKRINFORM reported.

“We demand that court decisions be implemented and pension be paid in full,” Volodymyr Proskurin, chairman of the city committee of Chornobyl disaster liquidators, says, adding, “This is a legal requirement, although it has not been met for several months in a row. We will not leave the premises until we achieve guarantees of payment.”

However, the local pension fund says currently its budget has no funds for the execution of the relevant court decisions, and cash for the payment of pensions is under the management of Kyiv.

The protesters are preparing an appeal to the government.

Ukraine to file application on holding Olympics

In 2013 Ukraine will file an application on holding Olympics-2022, president of the national Olympic committee Serhiy Bubka told journalists.

“Now we are cooperating with experts to work out this concept of Olympic Games at the high level. Further we plan to meet the President of Ukraine to report on the matter and to determine further steps for the next two years,” Bubka said.

According to him, it is difficult to say now which countries will compete with Ukraine for the right to hold Olympics-2022. Bubka noted that according to his data the applications may be filed by Canada and Switzerland, as well as Germany (Munich), which failed to obtain the right to hold Olympics-2018.

“Canada wanted, but they have problems with pistes. Switzerland also wants, but we are not sure it will apply,” he added.

As reported earlier, President Viktor Yanukovych declared an intention to hold Olympics-2022 in Ukraine. According to official calculations, the event will cost the state several tens of milliards of dollars.

Ukraine to buy 25 high-speed trains annually

Within the next 5-6 years Ukraine intends to completely switch to high-speed operation and will order 20-25 high-speed trains annually, vice PM – minister for infrastructure Borys Kolesnikov told a press conference on Tuesday.

He noted that in connection with the plans to introduce full high-speed operation the high-speed trains will be produced in Ukraine. “We offered Hyundai and it agreed to organize production in Ukraine. Within the next 5-6 years Ukraine will order 20-25 high-speed trains annually and for this we will produce them only in the country,” he said.

Kolesnikov informed Hyundai had already projected and would produce sleeping compartments.

Kolesnikov also pointed out inefficiency to use different systems of high-speed trains. “Previous leadership of the railway department purchased ‘Skoda’. It is a good train, but now we have two different systems of high-speed trains. High-speed long-distance operation must be built on one system, and then we will have lower maintenance costs and cheaper tickets,” the official said.

Azarov: There are enough officials in Donetsk to solve problems of Chernobyl liquidators and Afghan soldiers

Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov believes there is a sufficient number of officials in Donetsk, who can settle the conflict and solve the problems of Chernobyl liquidators and Afghan soldiers, who announced a hunger strike in the regional department of the pension Fund.

“There are responsible officials in Donetsk, who re holding a dialogue with people. They have enough authority to hold talks. We have the situation under control,” Azarov told a briefing.

As a reminder, Chernobyl disaster liquidators went on a hunger strike in Donetsk on Monday, November 14, demanding an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the refusal of the authorities to cut benefits for this category of citizens.

Party of Regions accuses BYuT of double standards

The head of the parliamentary faction of the Party of Regions Oleksandr Yefremov has accused the BYuT faction of double standards regarding the decriminalization of the article 365 of the Criminal Code (Tymoshenko’s article).

“Several months ago the parliament registered a draft bill #9056. Author of the draft bill said in the explanatory note that the responsibility under the article 365 must be toughened. However, when the situation with Tymoshenko appeared the draft bill was urgently withdrew,” he noted.

Yefremov also added that after the withdrawal BYuT had registered another, opposite, draft bill, which provides for release from criminal responsibility under the above mentioned article. “Fist they wanted to toughen the responsibility, but later decided to withdraw the article from the Criminal Code. And all this happened during two months and within the same political force – BYuT faction,” PR faction leader underlined.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry to discuss with US 10-year visa for Ukrainians

Ukraine intends to raise the question before the US on possibility to issue 10-year visa for certain categories of Ukrainian citizens, Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Voloshyn told a briefing.

“We want to discuss a possibility of getting 10-year US visa for Ukrainians, who already have a five-year visa and have never violated American legislation,” he informed.

According to Voloshyn, this question will be discussed during consulate consultations between Ukraine and US, which are to be held with participation of Deputy Foreign Minister Pavlo Klymkyn.
