Ecologists call upon authorities to save Ukraine from garbage

Ecologists call upon authorities to save Ukraine from garbage

Ukraine is facing ecological collapse.

The scientific council of the All-Ukrainian ecology league held a conference on “Current condition of landfills in Ukraine: ecological, social and economic problems and ways of solving them,” ForUm correspondent reports.

In particular, according to ecologists’ data, about 50 million cu m or 12 million tons of garbage has been accumulated in Ukraine for the last year. The total area of landfills is 8 thousand hectares.
Ecologists state that a number of unauthorized landfills in Ukraine increases. There are 23.7 thousand illegal landfills registered for now. In this connection, the health of population worsens, air, land and waters are polluted. According to the data, 897 (20%) landfills in different regions of Ukraine do not correspond to minimal norms of security, while 314 (7%) landfills are overloaded.

According to the scientists-ecologists, Ukraine needs additional 670 landfills to satisfy the demand.
“The number of landfills increases annually and those landfills literally eat plentiful lands. We don’t have a system of garbage separation, and sanitary and industrial waste are put together, which leads to some kind of fermentation process, unknown for science. To what kind of new viruses it will give birth, we just don’t know. We have to work out effective measures on garbage recycling, to provide proper financing, to introduce more ecological technologies of waste recycling and to adopt a law on secondary material resources,” ecologist Tetiana Timochko says.

Timochko also noted that Europe tries to bring their waste recycling plants on the territory of Ukraine. “Our authorities present it in a bright wrapping as new ecological projects. For example, Kyiv authorities planed to build a waste incinerator in Troeshchina, saying it was nothing but a recycling plant. Only efforts of ecologists and public managed to prevent the construction. The wind rose in that region could lead to pollution of the whole left bank,” she said.

In his turn, the head of the Kharkiv ecology organization Serhiy Razmetayev believes Ukrainian parliament must adopt a law, which regulates waste managing. “Without it local authorities will do nothing,” he said.

According to him, the majority of Ukraine’s landfills have the first class of danger. “This is all because of indiscriminate dumping wastes. The most dangerous are batteries, electric devices, medical devices, including syringes, biological material after surgery,” Razmetayev said.

The head of Ternopil ecological department Stepan Vadzyuk supported his colleague saying “at least, it is unethical when homeless dogs are carrying amputated arms and legs in their teeth.” “Four medical enterprises were deprived of licenses, and the third of medical institutes got a warning in connection with such accidents,” he added.

The ecologists also noted that according to their data, 20 enterprises of Ukraine exceed their pollution quotas by 20(!) times, but hide these figures and report different numbers.

“In fact Ukraine uses its pollution quota over and above, but somehow we manage to hide this data and even dare to sell allegedly unused one,” Timochko states.

Taking into account the above mentioned the ecologists called upon the parliament to work out effective measures to prevent Ukraine from diving deep into…

Azarov: Comments on Tymoshenko's trial are pressure on court

Azarov: Comments on Tymoshenko’s trial are pressure on court

Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov said that every statement concerning the case of Yulia Tymoshenko, made by both Ukrainian and foreign politicians, is to some extent pressure on the court. He said this in an interview with Austrian newspaper Die Presse, ForUm learned from the press office of the Party of Regions.

“Every statement about the process is influence on the court. I am sure it is also so in the Austrian legislation,” Mykola Azarov said.

Answering the reporter’s question what would happen if the court does not return a guilty verdict, the Head of Government said: “If the Court issued its decision, we will comment.” “But not a minute earlier,” he stressed.

Commenting on the statements of the alleged selective approach to the trial on Yulia Tymoshenko, Mykola Azarov said: “This is a common phrase used by media. It is not proven.”

“Even in Austria there are trials on former politicians. But I never think to say that someone practices selective criminal liability. This principle should be also applied to Ukraine,” he added.

Ukraine to issue new Explanatory Dictionary

At 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence it is planned to issue 20-volume Explanatory Dictionary of the Ukrainian language, National Academy official Volodymyr Shyrokov informed.
He noted that the current Explanatory Dictionary, issued back in 70-80ies is out of date, because contains too many marxism leninism notions, as well as Lenin’s quotes.

According to him, the electronic version of the 20-volume dictionary has been created in the virtual lexicographic lab. 18 volumes of the dictionary contain about 200 thousand words and 70 thousand phrases. Other two volumes contain 100 thousand geographical names. The dictionary also contains slang and vulgarism, though totally taboo vocabulary is not included, Shyrokov noted.

The official informed that the fist volume was issued in small circulation in the end of 2010. “We could not issue more because we were lack of funding,” Shyrokov explained and added it was planned to issue 20 volumes of 50 thousand printed samples of circulation before 2016, 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

The National Academy official also pointed out that electronic dictionaries become very popular among population. According to him, electronic dictionaries are issued on state order of 10 thousand CDs annually.

“Such number of samples is still not enough. That’s why a lot of unlicensed copies of ‘Dictionaries of Ukraine’ circulate within internet. On one hand this is a violation of copy rights, but on the other hand we don’t persecute the hackers, because we believe they do a good deed, promoting the Ukrainian language,” Shyrokov said.

Ukraine's parliament may not ratify Association Agreement with EU

Ukraine’s parliament may not ratify Association Agreement with EU

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine may not ratify the Association Agreement with EU if Ukraine’s membership prospects are not mentioned in it, deputy head of VR committee on foreign affairs Leonid Kozhara declared.

“The absence of such reference upsets the balance of political forces in Ukraine concerning European integration and will benefit those who push our country away from Europe,” he believes.

“This could have a negative impact on the balance of political forces in Parliament during the Agreement ratification, reinforcing the position of opponents of EU-Ukraine Association. Accordingly, it will be much harder for us to find support in Parliament when the issue will be voted,” he said.

Kozhara underlined that Ukraine is interested in signing the Association Agreement with the European Union, including the creation of deep and comprehensive free trade area.

According to him, there is a consensus between the government and the opposition on support of the European integration of Ukraine, with which most citizens agree.

“Therefore it is extremely important for us, such a serious step as the signing of Association Agreement to contain a reference of the European perspective for our state,” he said.

In MP’s opinion, inclusion of such a point in the agreement will be welcomed in the Ukrainian society and by representatives of leading political forces.
