About 1.4 million fans expected at UEFA EURO 2012 matches

At the European Football Championship 2012 finals, about 1.4 million fans are expected, Director of the Local Organizing Committee EURO 2012 Ukraine Markiyan Lubkivsky said.

“At the previous European Championship, which was held in Austria and Switzerland, there were 1.1 million fans and I believe that we will have a bit more. We will have approximately 1.4 million fans,” he said, UKRINFORM reported.

Lubkivsky noted that the European Championship is the most large-scale project within the UEFA framework, the world’s third prestigious sports event.

He also added that holding UEFA EURO 2012 in Ukraine and Poland is the third time when Eastern Europe hosts such an event, following the Olympic Games in Sarajevo and Moscow.

Tymoshenko: Yushchenko lied under oath

Tymoshenko: Yushchenko lied under oath

Batkivshchyna Party leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has drawn the court’s attention to the false testimony given by former President Viktor Yushchenko during his interrogation 럣ourt as a witness for the prosecution.

“Yushchenko’s statements regarding his non-interference in gas contract negotiations confirm that he gave false testimony under oath,” Yulia Tymoshenko said today in court, according to her official website.

The ex-premier believes that it was Viktor Yushchenko’s interference in gas talks in late 2008 that prevented the timely signing of gas contracts for the supply and transit of Russian natural gas.

“The main reason for the so-called gas crisis and need to operate the gas system in reverse mode, thus putting it on the verge of technical disaster and the Russian side’s tough stance on the price of gas was President Yushchenko’s recalling Oleh Dubyna from talks in Moscow on December 31,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.

Azarov asks Ukrainians to save energy because of 'enslaving' Russian gas deal

Azarov asks Ukrainians to save energy because of ‘enslaving’ Russian gas deal

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov called on Wednesday for Ukrainians to keep their doors and windows tightly closed and conserve gas when cooking because of Ukraine’s “enslaving” gas contract with Russia.

“We are asking our citizens to do their best to save energy. Because in conditions of the ‘gas hole’ dug for the whole population, the enslaving contract, closed windows, draft-proof doors [and] economical use of gas stoves are a matter of patriotism and survival,” Azarov told a government meeting, referring to the 2009 gas deal with Russia.

Kiev and Moscow are currently in a row over gas prices, with Ukraine trying to revise the 10-year agreement that ties the price for gas to the price for oil, which has been rising recently. Azarov has said the deal was unfair and that Kiev was overpaying up to $6 billion a year for the gas, RIA Novosti reported.

The Health Ministry of Ukraine proposes to forbid all forms of tobacco advertisement. The Ministry reminded that September 4, 2011 was the fifth anniversary of Ukraine’s joining the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

“Thanks to implementation of such regulations of the Convention as price increase for tobacco goods, limitation of smoking areas in public zones and information campaign on consequences of smoking, Ukraine managed to essentially reduce its outspread,” the statement of the Ministry reads.

The press office of the Ministry informed that the draft bill on ban of commercial, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco goods had been prepared for consideration in its second reading by the Verkhovna Rada.

According to the Ministry, the draft bill fully corresponds to the requirements of the Convention on Tobacco Control and will result in further reduction of tobacco smoking.

Tymoshenko demands evidence that she acted in her personal interest during signing of gas contracts

Tymoshenko demands evidence that she acted in her personal interest during signing of gas contracts

Representatives of the state prosecution failed to prove during the trial that her personal interests were the motivation for signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009, Batkivshchyna Party leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said while testifying in court today.

“In the indictment, the state prosecution claims that “the prime minister acted in her personal interests” – this was not proved, the court was given no evidence of intent, and I would like during debate for the court to present evidence and motives,” Yulia Tymoshenko said, according to her official website

Yulia Tymoshenko called the prosecution’s charges that she acted in her personal interests during the gas crisis in 2009 “rubbish insinuations that in a chaotic manner were set forth in the indictment.”

The ex-premier also called unjustified statements by the prosecution that she agreed to sign the contracts despite being aware that the demands of the Russian side were unjustified. “This is a collection of words for which there is no evidence in the case. This claim is false and unsubstantiated,” she said.

Yulia Tymoshenko also called “absurd” the claim by the Prosecutor General’s Office that by signing gas contracts that were disadvantageous for Ukraine she was trying to create “a positive image of an effective leader capable of resolving the gas crisis.”

“I absolutely clearly worked so that the state lived normally, so that people’s needs were met, so that state corporations worked normally. I worked intensely as a politician to create a positive image from my work as prime minister. This is normal for any politician. This can’t be the motive of a crime, it can’t be an intended action of an illegal nature,” she stressed.

Minister Boiko: Naftogaz to be restructured by year's end

Minister Boiko: Naftogaz to be restructured by year’s end

NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine will be restructured by January 1, 2012, Ukraine’s Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko has told reporters Wednesday, according to UKRINFORM.

According to him, an interdepartmental working group has been set up to form a package of documents for that.

The minister added that in 2012 Naftogaz will be privatized or will hold IPO, or its shares will be partially sold through international financial markets.

“Consultants are working to choose the most appropriate model [of restructuring – ed.],” Boiko emphasized.

Asked by reporters about the settlement of accounts payable by Naftogaz, the minister explained that these obligations will be repaid in the course of incorporation of the company.

“We are negotiating with partners to whom Naftogaz has loan commitments. We have decided to sell the company’s shares, which will be used to repay the loan,” the minister added.

“All commitments will be fulfilled. The sale of shares will ensure repayment of the loan,” – he added.

During the company incorporation it is planned to receive USD 7 billion, which, according to the calculations of the ministry, should be enough to increase production and investment by the state in gas production.
