Ukrainian Canadian Congress condemns politically motivated arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress has expressed dismay with what international institutions have labelled a politically motivated arrest of Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

“The government of Ukraine is pursuing what appears to be politically-motivated, selective justice in a deliberate and systematic program to remove political opposition. This is another step away from democracy,” stated Ukrainian Canadian Congress President Paul Grod. “Today’s arrest of Tymoshenko is another in an ever-growing list of violations of human rights, democracy and the rule of law which have been regressing under the Yanukovych government.”

Despite numerous pronouncements by the Government of Ukraine to the contrary, there is abundant and growing evidence that Ukraine is reverting to an authoritarian model of governance as the government moves to systematically reverse the democratic gains made by the Orange Revolution.

“The international community cannot sit on its hands as democratic freedoms are being eroded in Ukraine,” stated Grod. “We have formally asked the Government of Canada to use all diplomatic tools at its disposal to communicate Canada’s displeasure with the anti-democratic developments in Ukraine and call for her immediate release.”

The UCC has repeatedly requested that Canada use all of its influence within the Euro-Atlantic community and Euro-Atlantic agencies to maintain pressure on the Yanukovych government to respect democracy and human rights. Furthermore we have called upon the Government of Canada to ensure that any Canada-Ukraine free trade agreement be contingent upon Ukrainian government commitments to respecting democracy and human rights.

40 guarantees ask court to release Tymoshenko, but judge leaves Tymoshenko in custody

40 guarantees asked Pechersk District Court of Kyiv release on bail Yulia Tymoshenko. Defender of Yulia Tymoshenko Yuriy Sukhov made a motion on changing the preventive punishment towards Yulia Tymoshenko from taking into custody into bailment that was based on statements of representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia.

Judge Rodion Kireyev has rejected the defense petition to changes the restrictive measure against Yulia Tymoshenko from incarceration to release on guarantee of appearance in court.

“There are no grounds to change the measure of restraint. The motion is denied,” Rodion Kireyev said.

Ukraine implementing European experience of road operation

The Ukrainian government has approved of amendments to the concept of reforming the system of public road management and adopted a plan of measures for its implementation, the Ministry of Infrastructure said in a statement Tuesday, according to UKRINFORM.

Among the key measures, which were presented by Deputy Prime Minister/Infrastructure Minister Borys Kolesnikov, is a transfer along with the appropriate funding of more than 122,000 km of local roads to regional administrations. Thus, the instrument expands powers and enhances responsibility of local authorities for the management of local roads.

It is also planned to restructure State Joint Stock Company “Motor Roads of Ukraine”. In order to create a competitive environment and improve the quality of work in the market for road maintenance it is planned to involve private companies.

As part of the operation of public roads the Ministry of Infrastructure has set priorities – providing conditions for safe and comfortable movement of citizens along Ukrainian roads.

Therefore, the implementation of concepts will not only improve the state of roads, but also help improve the living standards of Ukrainians and the international image of Ukraine.
