Court deprives Shukhevych, Bandera of Hero of Ukraine titles

The Higher Administrative Court of Ukraine has on Tuesday upheld a judgment of Donetsk Administrative Court of Appeals that declared illegal the orders of former President Viktor Yushchenko conferring the Hero of Ukraine title to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), Roman Shukhevych, and the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-UPA), Stepan Bandera.

Thus, the board of the court rejected appeals by Viktor Yushchenko, Roman Shukhevych’s son Yuriy Shukhevych, Stepan Bandera (S. Bandera’s grandson), Svoboda party and a number of citizens.

On October 2007, Yushchenko issued an order conferring Shukhevych the Hero of Ukraine title.

On April 2, Donetsk Regional Administrative Court declared invalid and cancelled Yushchenko’s decrees of October 2007 and January 20, 2010 to confer the Hero of Ukraine titles to Shukhevych and Bandera.

Hryvnia devaluation may reach 10% in 2012 - expert

Hryvnia devaluation may reach 10% in 2012 – expert

The devaluation of the Ukrainian national currency may reach 10% in 2012. This forecast was announced by Erik Naiman, managing partner of the financial company Capital Times.

“Base condition of the hryvnia does not involve devaluation. I see a clear desire of the National Bank to keep the hryvnia at the current mark. Of course, it runs on the current account deficit that is growing, but it is covered even with guest workers’ money. With the foreign loans being drawn by all the state corporations, the balance of payments is still positive. But if this continues, then next year we’ll have to talk about a real devaluation threat, not only in terms of a US default, but also for the domestic economic reasons,” Naiman said, UKRINFORM reported.

Tymoshenko’s new lawyer given two days to study 5,000 pages of case papers

Judge Rodion Kireyev of the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv has given Yulia Tymoshenko’s new defense lawyer Yuriy Sukhov two days to review the 5,000 page case file.

The decision was made by the judge after consideration of the petition by the defense to provide eight weeks to study the case. According to Sukhov, “for proper preparation for defense” 7 weeks are needed for reading materials and a week – for analysis. But the public prosecution said that all defenders of Yulia Tymoshenko had been given enough time to study the case materials.

After announcing the ruling the judge adjourned the trial until 10:00 on Thursday, August 4.
