Tymoshenko: biased prosecutors must be disqualified

Tymoshenko: biased prosecutors must be disqualified

During the next court session Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko intends to request that representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office serving as the prosecution in the trial over gas contracts from 2009 be disqualified.

“At the next court hearing we will petition the court to disqualify the prosecutors, one of whom is calling me a convict before the investigation has even ended, while the other is giving me ten years in prison. This is proof of the quality of justice in Ukraine,” Yulia Tymoshenko told journalists after today’s court hearing.

Yulia Tymoshenko recalled that representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office Liliya Frolova publicly stated that a verdict should be issued sentencing the former prime minister to 10 years in prison.

“I want to publicly state that prosecutor Frolova, contrary to the law, contrary to their claims that the judicial process is impartial, at the last press conference said that I will be given 10 years and no conditional sentence. I want to use this example to demonstrate the kind of prosecutors representing the prosecution today in court – they are biased, bribed, intimidated and serving the regime,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.

UEFA: EURO 2012 changes Ukraine for the better

During preparation to the European Football Championship 2012 substantial changes took place in Ukraine, Tournament Director Martin Kallen has said in an interview to the Information Center Ukraine 2012, UKRINFORM reported.

He said that there are many changes. “Take a look at roads that change fundamentally,” he said, in particular in host cities. According to him, appearance of new airports mobilizes every city. If to visit other Ukrainian cities, there is substantial difference in favor of host cities, he says. The Director believes that those changes concern both ordinary people and professional sport. When the country gets experience in organization of such large competitions, it is a great achievement, Martin Kallen said.

Kallen has underscored that it is possible to speak that EURO 2012 actually made much, what would not happen by itself over four years. According to him, if it were not for EURO 2012, over four years, Ukraine would hardly have those changes – new highways, up-to-date airports, renewed roads and world-level stadiums.

Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko and her defense have asked the court to provide time for lawyer Mykola Tytarenko to review the materials in the criminal case brought against the former prime minister of Ukraine over gas contracts signed in 2009.

“Since I did not have the opportunity to review the case materials, in accordance with articles 48, 253, 288, section 3 of article 365 of the Criminal Procedure Code, please allow one month for familiarization with the case materials, since I was given this opportunity by the court only on June 30 at 19:00. Without review, I can not perform my function effectively. Please consider this petition and grant it,” said Mykola Tytarenko, according to Tymoshenko’s official website.

In her turn, Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that the court must allow time to review the case file. “We were under time pressure to ensure quality defense. A lawyer needs to read, analyze, prepare the necessary petitions, order examinations so that the defense is able to withstand such trials,” she said.

“I insist that according to section 2 of article 289 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Mykola Tytarenko and we be given a month to review the case file,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.

President hopes Parliament would approve pension reform during this session

President hopes Parliament would approve pension reform during this session

President hopes Parliament would approve pension reform during this session

President Viktor Yanukovych hopes the Parliament would approve pension reform by the end of the current session, he said at today’s joint Ukrainian-Armenian business forum, recalling that the relevant bill has already passed its first reading. “This is a very difficult question, but no matter how long it is protracted, it will never be easy to resolve from the political point of view. The sooner we start and walk this painful path, the earlier our people start living better. We are sure of this,” he said.

Viktor Yanukovych stressed that the existing transfer-based pension system has exhausted itself and makes it impossible to raise pensions to a new level. “So we need the three-level system, we need pension reform,” he said. He expressed confidence that the introduction of such a system would allow raising the minimum pension a few times.

The government has to be honest with the older generation, Viktor Yanukovych said. “We need to introduce this system and state clearly: in two years pensions will double, in a few years more they will triple. And we will do it,” he said.
