Komorowski: Leaders of European countries back Ukraine's EU membership prospects

Komorowski: Leaders of European countries back Ukraine’s EU membership prospects

The leaders of European countries who attended the 27th CEE heads of state summit in Warsaw have common views on the European future of Ukraine, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has said, UKRINFORM reported.

“The idea is to create chances for Ukraine’s rapprochement with the integrated western world, with Europe,” Komorowski said.

He said that that some pessimistic statements had not proved true and that Ukraine was not the subject of discussion at the summit, but its active participant. “There were far-fetched statements concerning Ukraine’s meeting the requirements of European integration and the issues of Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-U.S. relations in the important issue of developing democracy in this country,” Komorowski said, adding that Warsaw took it with satisfaction and as “Poland’s significant commitment to continuing to work on Ukraine’s approximation to the standards of the Western world.”

In Warsaw, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych took part in a working lunch on behalf of President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski in honor of the Heads of States participating in the 17th Central Europe Summit. Before the lunch Yanukovych had a brief conversation with President of the United States Barack Obama.

Minimum wage, pension shall be UAH 3,800 – trade unions

The National Forum of Trade Unions of Ukraine estimated that the minimum wage and pension in this country should be at least 3,800-3,900 UAH (1 USD – 7.98 UAH), UKRINFORM reported.
According to NFTU Chairman Myroslav Yakibchuk, the current calculations of the cost of living and minimum wage are held under an outdated system and at the old prices. Intentions of the authorities to bring before the end of the year the minimum wage to 1,004 UAH are unable to fill the food basket of ordinary Ukrainians.
Earlier, the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, said he believes that due to over-fulfillment of the state budget, in the second half of this year the level of salaries and pensions should be reconsidered.
As reported, on May 18, the Parliament rejected the draft decree on increasing living and minimum wage in 2011.

Yanukovych: "Affordable housing" national project must be implemented broadly in Kyiv

“Affordable housing” National Project must be implemented in Kyiv to the maximum by the efforts of central and local government, President Viktor Yanukovych said during the presentation of the Kyiv Development Strategy until 2025.
The President said the problem of providing Kyiv inhabitants with housing is one of the most important for the capital. “The planned 30% increase of the current level of housing provision in 15 years is not sufficient, but it is still a very ambitious goal, which will require hard work to achieve,” Viktor Yanukovych said.
According to the President, another important part of the Kyiv Development Strategy should be the housing communal reform reinforced, particularly creating competitive environment on the communal services market, involvement of private capital in the upgrading of communal infrastructure, and moving to the commercially reasonable communal tariffs.
Of course, added Viktor Yanukovych, the Kyiv Development Strategy presented today would be updated. And public opinion should be a key factor here.

President: Ukrainian capital’s development is a matter of national importance

The development of the capital, its improvement and renewal is a matter of national importance. “Order in a state begins with its capital. The success of modernization of the whole Ukraine will depend on how successful and effective will be changes in Kyiv,” President Viktor Yanukovych said during the presentation for the Kyiv Development Strategy until 2025.
Certainly, Viktor Yanukovych said, Kyiv is the face of Ukraine, its business card, which largely forms the image of Ukraine in the whole world.
The President stressed that the city’s leadership must always remember: primary criteria for evaluating their work is the welfare and quality of life of millions of Kyiv citizens, who want comfortable and safe living conditions, landscaping and beautification, clean air and comfort.
“Creating the right conditions for city’s residents is the main task of the local authorities… We have lots of work here. And we do know how to do it,” Viktor Yanukovych said.
Painful remains the question of fighting corruption and the consequences of Kyiv property and land theft, he said.
“Fighting the disgraceful phenomenon of corruption must be continuous, disregarding the ranks. I look forward to the Kyiv Council’s appropriate stance in this regard. I have no doubt that we will bring order together in that area. We will be rooting out corruption. And not only in Kyiv, but in other cities of Ukraine too,” he said

EU concerned over suggestions of political motivation behind cases against the opposition

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today expressing the EU’s concern regarding the case against Yulia Tymoshenko:
“The EU has closely followed recent developments in the cases of Yulia Tymoshenko and other members of the former government of Ukraine. At the request of the High Representative, the EU Head of Delegation is in contact with the authorities in Kyiv regarding the court decision of 23 May to detain Mrs Tymoshenko, and to express our concern at suggestions of political motivation behind these cases.
The EU will continue to underline to the Ukrainian authorities the need for respect for the rule of law, incorporating fair, impartial and independent legal processes. We note the danger of provoking any perception that judicial measures are used selectively, and we stress the importance of ensuring the maximum transparency of investigations, prosecutions and trials. We consider these principles especially important in a country with which we intend to enter into a deeper contractual relationship built upon political association, and we recall that Ukraine currently holds the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.”
