Kliuyev: Ukraine’s laws on combating violence against children meet international standards

The legislative framework of Ukraine concerning the protection of children generally meets international standards in this area, First Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Economic Development and Trade Andriy Kliuyev was speaking at the International Conference “Combating violence against children: from isolated actions to integrated strategies” in Kyiv Tuesday, UKRINFORM reported.

“Ukraine has elaborated a legislative framework to protect children against all forms of violence, which generally meets international standards in this area, but a practical mechanism to counter various forms of violence against children often turns out to be ineffective because it does not provide adequate partnership between all those responsible for violence prevention,” he said. Kliuyev added that the protection of children requires a personal approach, taking into account individual characteristics.

The official also stressed that the problem of violence against children is common to all countries, and therefore it can only be overcome through joint efforts. In this context, Ukraine should take advantage of international experience. “In our state we study the recommendations of the Council of Europe on these issues, including on integrated approaches of national campaigns on specific aspects of children rights violations,” Kliuyev said.

Yanukovych: Government must respond to officials’ inactivity in solving housing tariffs problem

President Viktor Yanukovych has instructed the Government to make conclusions on the officials, who protract the issue of tariffs for housing and communal services.

“The President instructed the Government to consider the issue at a special meeting and make the toughest conclusions as to the persons, who allowed the protraction of this important issue for the people,” Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said after his meeting with the President.

“The President is concerned about the slowness of consideration of the question of tariffs for housing and communal services,” the Prime Minister said.

Earlier, the Prime Minister said, the President had repeatedly emphasized that the persons responsible for setting the tariffs must cease the overpricing and correct the unreasonable prices.

President: Wages and pensions should be raised in the second half of the year

President Viktor Yanukovych believes that because of the overfulfilment of the state budget profits plan, the level of wages and pensions must be reconsidered in the second half of this year.

“We are certainly willing to revise the budget in the second half of the year. There is overfulfilment of its income plan. Let’s see, if we could in the second half of the year, perhaps, slightly increase the salaries, pensions, see what is going on in the Pension Fund, the problems it faces,” he said at a meeting with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.

“People are now expecting improvement. I understand well that we have quite a complicated financial situation because of the international debts. But let’s see what did the economy give us in the first half of the year, and what can we offer in the second half. In terms of regional development, and completion of the unfinished facilities, roads, social infrastructure, etc.,” Viktor Yanukovych said.
