Tymoshenko: I will defend all political prisoners

Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko plans today to meet with European diplomats to discuss the state of democratic rights and freedoms in Ukraine and political repression of opponents of the ruling government.

“At the request of ambassadors of all European countries I’m going to meet with them because their concern over what’s going on in Ukraine is clear,” Yulia Tymoshenko told journalists today outside the Pechersk Court in Kyiv.

Yulia Tymoshenko said that during the meeting they will discuss ways to counter political repression in Ukraine. “They want to speak with me right away and understand how to stop the situation in Ukraine, which, based on global opinion, is one of authoritarianism, kleptocracy, absence of rights and law. What the government is doing today has nothing to do with democracy,” she added.

“I am going to this meeting right now and will defend all political prisoners who have been jailed illegally: Yuriy Lutsenko, Makarenko, Didenko, Shepitko, including the former deputy defense minister who, according to Yuriy Lutsenko, yesterday was moved to a ward where they usually hold people with tuberculosis, who is behind bars for no reason,” said Yulia Tymoshenko.

Lutsenko demands jury trial for his case

A preliminary hearing of a criminal case against former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko has begun at the Pechersky district court of Kyiv on Monday, UKRINFORM reported.

“I have every reason to believe in bias of the Pechersky and the Appeals courts of Kyiv. Therefore, I declare that I choose and demand the consideration of my case by jury trial,” Lutsenko stressed.

The existence of trial by jury is envisaged by the Ukrainian Constitution and the Law “On Judiciary of Ukraine”, but those courts have not yet been created.

The Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal case against Lutsenko regarding the embezzlement of state property worth UAH 360,000, as well as the abuse of power and the use of forged documents. The former minister was arrested on December 26, 2010.

On April 22, Lutsenko, who was in the Lukyanivka remand prison of Kyiv, went on an indefinite hunger strike after the Kyiv Court of Appeals on April 21 extended Lutsenko’s arrest until May 26.

Opposition factions OU-PSD and BYuT-Batkivshchyna, in protest against the prosecution of former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, walked out of the parliament’s session hall last week.

Before that, OU-PSD faction chairman Mykola Martynenko said that the faction demands immediate release from custody of Lutsenko, who has been in jail since late December and now is in a critical condition.

The MP stressed that over 100 signatures of MPs have already been collected under the appeal for taking Lutsenko on bail. Martynenko confirmed that MPs are ready to make a cash deposit for Yuriy Lutsenko.

Yanukovych: Ukraine opens a new page in relations with the European Union

A united Europe is Ukraine’s strategic partner and in many ways – an example, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych emphasized in his address to the nation on the occasion of Europe Day.

“We do everything so that in the nearest future Europe and Ukraine became inseparable. I am convinced that Ukraine is an important brick in the European House foundation, which will ensure its reliability and future. Strategic partnership between Ukraine and the EU is steadily transforming into the mutual integration,” president said.

Yanukovych emphasized that this year Ukraine opens a new page in relations with the European Union.

“We open the door to the United Europe. Negotiations on the Association Agreement are approaching their final stage. We are steadily getting closer to creating a free trade zone with the EU. The Action Plan to liberalize EU visa regulations for Ukraine is being carried out. I am convinced that in the medium term we will achieve cancelling of the visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens,” Yanukovych said in his address.

The president expressed confidence that 2011 will be a year of new achievements for Ukraine on the European path

President signs law creating equal conditions for starting business

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych has signed the Law “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on the Simplification of Procedures for Starting Businesses”, which creates equal starting conditions for those willing to do business in Ukraine.

The Law was introduced under the Program of Economic Reforms for 2010-2014. Its implementation will allow simplifying and optimizing the procedure of legal entities registration, which in turn will encourage entrepreneurs to start their own businesses and improve Ukraine’s rating in The Doing Business Project by the “Starting a Business”.
