Yanukovych: Media independence a goal for development of democratic society in Ukraine

Yanukovych: Media independence a goal for development of democratic society in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who met with PACE President Mevlut Cavusoglu in Kyiv on Monday, has described as “successful” Ukraine’s cooperation with the Council of Europe and the implementation of the Action Plan for 2008-2011, UKRINFORM reported.

The head of state noted that the areas of cooperation and the objectives of the plan coincided with the program principles of the Ukrainian government’s activities that are being implemented in order to reform the country.

The president also pointed to the launch of the judicial reform and preparations for reform of the criminal justice system. Yanukovych noted that the conduct of these reforms, as well as the intensification and deepening of cooperation with the PACE, would help combat corruption, prevent money laundering, strengthen and enhance the independence of the judiciary, as well as facilitate the public’s access to justice.

Yanukovych stressed that the Ukrainian government did not infringe on the freedom of speech. “Ensuring the freedom of speech is a very painful issue. The opposition raised a flag and is searching for weaknesses in this issue. Of course, they exist, but they are mostly artificial. I am confident that the authorities do not attempt to impede the freedom of speech,” the president said.

“Ensuring the independence of the media is one of the goals for the development of a democratic society,” Yanukovych said, adding that work on drafting a strategy of public broadcasting is continuing.

Azarov: Government will send talented young people to study abroad

The Government of Ukraine in 2011 will send over 300 students to study in leading universities of the world. The Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov said today during meeting with Minister Mentor of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew, Cabinet’s press office reported.

“In 2007, during my official visit to Singapore, you advised me to send as many young people as possible to study in Western countries. I will take your advice to implement. Already next year we will send more than 300 people to study in leading Western universities,” Azarov said.

Thus, the Head of the Ukrainian Government explained that currently the financial capacity of the State is to teach only 300 people abroad. “But every year we gradually will increase that figure,” the Prime Minister of Ukraine is convinced.

He added that the availability of a sufficient number of professionals who possess the most modern technologies in various spheres of life is the prerequisite of successful reform.

In turn, Minister Mentor of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew stressed that the Ukrainian nation is very educated, so it is necessary to use this intellectual potential. According to him, the Government of Ukraine is to create conditions for national experts who would stimulate them to continue this work in its country and not go abroad or remain there after training.

Lee Kuan Yew said that Singapore at its time lost a lot of specialists who travelled to study in more developed countries, because there they were offered better conditions for living and development. “But we tried to create such a complex environment that promotes work at home,” the Minister Mentor of Singapore said.

Ukraine again a favorite of investors

Ukraine again a favorite of investors

The issue of Ukrainian eurobonds worth USD 2 billion has caused an increased interest from financial investors. The demand for bonds, which is a record one in the history of the country’s eurobond issues, exceeded supply by over three times and reached USD 6.2 billion, UKRINFORM reported, citing the government portal.

At the same time, the report says, pent-up demand for at least USD 4 billion is evidence of the possibility of Ukrainian corporations to confidently enter the international market of borrowings.

“The 2010 eurobond issue has become the confirmation of Ukraine’s return to the eurobond market and testified the openness of the international debt capital markets to Ukraine and the complete confidence of the world’s largest financial investors in Ukraine,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said.

Presidents of Ukraine, Russia conduct informal meeting in Zavidovo residence

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev held an informal meeting at the official residence place of the President of Russia Zavidovo.

The two Heads of State have discussed their participation in the International Motor Rally and discussed the prospects of cross-border cooperation.

Bureaucracy in Ukraine and Russia prevents people living in border regions from interacting normally, said Viktor Yanukovych.

In addition to vehicles border crossing the states should also address this problem of building more than 100 pedestrian crossings at the Ukrainian-Russian border, President Yanukovych said.

The Heads of State agreed to continue the dialogue on border cooperation at their meeting in Gelendzhik (Russia) on October 4.

“We will set the issue of regional cooperation going,” President Yanukovych said. In addition, the two Presidents have discussed the possibility of cooperation during Euro 2012 in Ukraine, 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and 2022 Winter Olympics in the Carpathians suggested by Ukraine.
