Every foreign tourist in Ukraine spends on average USD 200-300 per day

The World Tourism Organization has calculated that every tourist who comes to Ukraine spends on average USD 200-300 per day.

This amount includes expenditures on hotel accommodation, food, taxi services, and museums. The Ukrainian State Tourism and Resort Service noted that 20.7 million foreign tourists had visited Ukraine in 2009, which was 18%, or 4.6 million, less than in 2008.

The Ukrainian Culture and Tourism Ministry reported, citing data from the State Border Service, that the number of Ukrainian tourists who left abroad last year had reached 15.3 million people, which was 1.1%, or 164,600 people, less than in 2008.

Ukrainian railway workers to get special phrasebooks for UEFA EURO 2012

The Ministry of Transport and Communications intends to provide the conductors in the trains and railway station workers with dictionaries and phrasebooks to service foreign passengers during the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.

According to UKRINFORM,  the phrasebooks will be released in five languages: Ukrainian, English, French, German and Polish.

The dictionaries are being designed and compiled by specialists at the Dnipropetrovsk National University of Railway Transport. It is assumed that such phrasebooks will contain the most necessary technical terms, words and expressions used in the professional activity of railwaymen. The project will be completed before the end of this year.

Ukrainian army to be smaller, but more effective, says Defense Ministry

The reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine should involve a personnel reduction on the one hand, and an increase in its combat strength on the other, according to Defense Minister Myklailo Yezhel.

“It foresees the armed forces being small in size, but effective”, the minister said speaking at the National University of Defense of Ukraine on the Day of Knowledge marking the beginning of the school year, the press service of Defense Ministry reported on Wednesday, Interfax-Ukraine informed.

The minister said that the reform of the Armed Forces would be conducted in three stages.

In 2010-2011, the situation in the army will be stabilized, its personnel reduced and its structure reformed. Besides, the Defense Ministry is planning to earn additional funds from raising the efficiency of its economic activities.

In 2012-2012, the Armed Forces’ structure will be streamlined and the personnel cut will continue, and the more funds will be provided for the further reform of the army.

In 2014-2015, the structure of budgetary expenditures of the Defense Ministry will be changed and the army’s combat capabilities increased.

Ukraine, China seeking new level of bilateral cooperation

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, currently on a state visit to Beijing, stressed at a meeting with China’s President Hu Jintao that Ukraine “for many years has been watching you are building a modern strong state with great interest”, UKRINFORM reported.

Yanukovych thanked the PRC leadership for “consistency and persistence in carrying out joint decisions taken by the leaders of Ukraine and China at a meeting in Washington,” which took place on April 12, 2010 as part of the Summit on Nuclear Security.

In turn, President Jintao stressed that the Chinese people highly appreciate the policy of strengthening relations with China, proclaimed by President Yanukovych, which the Ukrainian president has identified as one of the priorities of Ukrainian foreign policy.

The Chinese president expressed his confidence that this visit will serve a strong impetus for further development of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and bring these relations to a qualitatively new level.
