Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he will insist that the Verkhovna Rada hold an extraordinary session in order to amend the law on local elections, and that he will submit his bill of amendments on August 25.

“On August 25, right after Independence Day, I will sign [a bill of] amendments to the [local] election law and insist that the parliament hold an extraordinary session to ensure that we amend the law, and that political parties have a chance to participate in the elections under the new law,” he told reporters in Kaniv on Monday.

Ukraine wants Russia to guarantee gas transport system loading

At a meeting in Moscow of Ukraine’s Minister of Fuel and Energy Yuriy Boiko  and Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine  Yevhen Bakulin  with the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, the Ukrainian side discussed with Gazprom the possibility of obtaining guarantees for the loading of its gas transportation system, the press service of the Fuel and Energy Ministry  reported, according to UKRINFORM.

The parties discussed the strategic partnership between the two countries in the energy sector, in particular, the issues of functioning of the Ukrainian gas transport system.

As Yuriy Boiko stressed, the issue of loading the Ukrainian GTS is extremely important for Ukraine’s energy security. “We want to get assurances from Gazprom that there will be sufficient volumes of transit. The talks with Russia are aimed to ensure that we will not be left aside of the transit flows of Russian gas,” Boiko noted.

The information department of Gazprom has recently announced that the Head of Ukraine’s Fuel and Energy Minister, Yuriy Boiko and Board Chairman of Gazprom Alexei Miller resumes negotiations on establishment of a joint venture of Naftogaz and Gazprom.
