Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has officially confirmed that former Ukrainian Economy Minister Bohdan Danylyshyn has been put on the wanted list.

“On August 10, a charge against Danylylysh was brought and he was put on the wanted list,” the head of Prosecutor General’s Office press service Yuriy Boichenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

The Prosecutor General’s Office is investigating a criminal case against former Economy Minister Bohdan Danylyshyn opened under part 2, Article 364 of the Criminal Code, on charges of causing damages to the state worth UAH 4.5 million during the coordination of procurement procedures with the state-run Boryspil International Airport.

Yanukovych to push for EU membership

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych will head to Germany on August 30 to push for integration into the European Union, the country’s head of information policies said on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.

“We see Germany as a country with interests in Ukraine’s movement toward European standards in economy, leadership and energy,” Oleh Voloshyn said at a Foreign Ministry briefing.

Voloshyn also expressed his belief that Germany would back Ukraine’s entrance into the European Union.

“Our goal is to convince the Germans that Ukraine is an asset for the European community,” he said.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Natalia Zarudnaya told Deutsche Welle in an interview on Tuesday that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Yanukovych would also discuss the issue of organized crime and terrorism, both of which are important elements for integration.

She also said that issues concerning “further progress in liberalization of the visa regime will also be discussed.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko is currently in Germany to prepare for Yanukovych’s visit.

Meteorologists say Crimea may turn to island, but not soon

Meteorologists say Crimea may turn to island, but not soon

A forecast of Ukraine’s chief meteorologist Mykola Kulbida that the Crimean peninsula, south of Ukraine, may naturally become an island in the future has made a stir.

The Segodnya newspaper quotes Kulbida as saying that given that global sea level raises by 50 or more centimeters and, respectively, the level of the Black Sea, the Sivash estuary could become a marine strait, and the Crimea – an island.

However, Viktor Tarasenko, the president of the Crimean Academy of Sciences, notes that nothing abnormal is happening: “There is no cause for panic. The processes that Kulbida speaks about do not occur immediately. Theoretically, the Crimea could become an island, but this process under the most unfavorable developments will spread for hundreds of thousands of years”.

One way or another, but at the end of this week the most important academic institution in Crimea – Karadag Scientific Station named after Vyazemsky – will hold a closed meeting with academician Borys Paton, the president of the National Academy of Sciences. The agenda includes just the sea level rise.

Klitschko to defend WBC heavyweight title against Briggs

Vitali Klitschko will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Shannon Briggs of the United States in October. Klitschko’s management says the fight will take place in Hamburg on October 16.

“I am thrilled that I am finally going to box again in Hamburg. Briggs is a very strong challenger. I’m going to go through an intense training period to prepare for Briggs with my trainer Fritz Sdunek. He has more professional fights than me and he is one of the hardest punchers [at heavyweight],” Vitaliy Klychko said.

Shannon Briggs, 38, said he had signed a deal for Klychko bout late in July, but this had not been officially proved. The American vowed to pension Klitschko off.
