President: There is no reason for bread price rise

President: There is no reason for bread price rise

There is no reason for considerable price rise for bread, said President Viktor Yanukovych in an interview in Velyki Sorochyntsi.

“There will be a relative price stability on the grain market,” he said.

The President also said there could be slight fluctuations of bread prices, but assured that the government will do everything possible to prevent that.

Yanukovych said that the wheat harvest of about 40 million tonnes was expected in Ukraine this year, including about 17 million tonnes of bread wheat.

He said that around six million tonnes of wheat was required for annual consumption in Ukraine.

“We have set a task to buy one million tonnes of bread wheat for the state reserve. We have currently bought about 800,000 tonnes. And 1.5 million tonnes will be purchased for the regional funds,” he said.

Yanukovych noted that this was nearly a five-month reserve of grain.

“We have no grounds to say that Ukraine will be without bread. Our country will have bread,” he said.

Yanukovych said that the authorities were trying to set prices of grain this year at a level ensuring that “farmers could earn something.”

President points out goals for judicial reform

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that large-scale judicial reform in the country will guarantee the fairness and independence of the courts, the presidential press service has reported.

“The courts are obliged to be honest, and have no right to support any [political] forces, apart from the law and the legitimate interests of our citizens,” he said on Tuesday during a swearing-in ceremony of judges appointed to the post for the first time.

Yanukovych said that “the new generation of Ukrainian judges will be full of energy and the desire to defend the law and justice in building a democratic state.”

He called on the judges not to yield to attempts to influence their decisions. He also stressed the need to eliminate pressure on and interference in the work of the courts by any branch of power.

Yanukovych said that for this purpose he had tabled in parliament a bill on the judicial system and the status of judges, which was adopted by parliament on July 30.

He said that one of the tasks of judicial reform in Ukraine was bringing the judicial system in Ukraine into line with the standards and regulations of the Council of Europe.

Yanukovych: There is no censorship in Ukraine

Yanukovych: There is no censorship in Ukraine

President Viktor Yanukovych is sure there is no censorship in Ukraine, he said today talking to journalists at the Sorochyntsi Fair, presidential press office reported.

The President stressed that if censorship did really exist in Ukraine, hearing such a question from journalists would be highly unlikely.

Viktor Yanukovych noted that he understands well that the discussion about freedom of speech and censorship in Ukraine is being heated up to be later used as an argument in political struggle. The President asked media representatives to inform him if “someone prevents them from writing the truth”: “Please, give me names, name me a company, an owner … So far, I have not received any specific answers”.

The President stressed that he is interested in the existence of press freedom in Ukraine. “I do not think there is a person in Ukraine more interested in you writing and telling the truth, than I am. I would like to be your partner. I fully realize that only a free person, whose rights are protected, can live happily in this country. I would like my children and grandchildren to live in such a country and wish them that”, President Yanukovych said.

He added that this year Ukraine has got a powerful experience in flood recovery and firefighting efforts, and not only in Ukraine, but in the neighboring Russia as well.
