Ukraine 'neutral' on Russia-Belarus gas conflict - Foreign Ministry

Ukraine ‘neutral’ on Russia-Belarus gas conflict – Foreign Ministry

Ukraine has taken a neutral position in the Russia-Belarus gas conflict, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

“On a political level, Ukraine is completely neutral on this issue. We have absolutely no plans to interfere in this economic conflict,” Oleh Voloshyn said, RIA Novosti reported.

However, earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said Ukraine is ready to provide extra gas transit through its territory if the conflict causes a drop in Russian gas supplies to the EU.

“We’re talking about 15-20 billion cubic meters of gas,” he said.

Belarus refuses to pay the Russian gas price, set at $169 per 1,000 cubic meters for the first quarter of the year and $185 for the second quarter, and has been paying $150 since January 1 instead.

The Russian gas giant Gazprom decreased its Belarus supplies 15% on Monday over a $200 million debt Minsk has accumulated since the start of the year and further cut its supplies by 30% on Tuesday.

President praises Israeli decision to establish visa free travel for Ukrainians

Today, while visiting Khortytsia National Preserve, President Viktor Yanukovych has told the journalists that he praises the Israeli decision to cancel visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens and added that our country would obviously make a counter move.

“We wanted to solve this issue, and this is only the first sign. Undoubtedly, in the nearest future, most likely at the next meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, we will also take such decision that will be later ratified in the Parliament,” he said.

The President has also reminded that Ukraine continues negotiating visa free travel with the European Commission. “We work with the European Commission in order to initiate implementation of Ukraine’s action plan providing visa free travel for Ukrainian citizens,” said Viktor Yanukovych.

According to the Head of State, Ukraine can get the above-mentioned action plan in September.

Communist lawmaker threatens society with "a ghost of Stalin’s repressions"

The leader of the Crimean Communists, Leonid Hrach, who represents the radical wing of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU), is continuing to make tough accusations against his allies in the coalition, the Party of Regions.

Hrach said live on the ICTV television channel that the authorities were planning to complete the creation of an authoritarian regime in southern and eastern Ukraine after October 31, 2010 (a probable local election date).

“Everything is leading to that. By means of seizure, by hook or by crook, amending the law and using the government apparatus and huge amounts of money, [they are trying] to establish their dictatorship in local government agencies,” he said, UKRINFORM reported.

Hrach again described a staff reshuffle in the Crimean Council of Ministers, which was initiated by Crimean Prime Minister Vasyl Dzharty from the Party of Regions, as “reprisals” against the Communists, and accused the prime minister and the Party of Regions of “political Bonapartism.”

He forecast that if the deputies, especially those from local councils, were deprived of their immunity, and the elections to local councils were held under a mixed, majority-proportional system, “there will be not only authoritarianism, but the year of 1937 will knock at the doors and windows after October 31.”
