Our Ukraine party not going to step in ruling coalition

The political party “Our Ukraine” is not going to join the current parliamentary coalition [the Party of Regions, Bloc of Lytvyn and Communist Party – ed.] and is not holding any negotiations on this issue, the head of the political council of the Our Ukraine party, Vira Ulyanchenko, said commenting on statements by some politicians about opposition Our Ukraine’s plans to join the coalition, according to the party press service, UKRINFORM reported.

Ulyanchenko expressed confidence that the current efforts of all members of the party should be directed to defending fundamental for all patriots of Ukraine values and ideas – the unity of the Ukrainian nation, territorial integrity and sovereignty, preserving the Euro-Atlantic choice and democratic achievements of the last five years. “We are confident that such a position is in line with the interests of Ukraine,” Ulyanchenko stressed.

She denied reports about a meeting of Viktor Yushchenko with Viktor Yanukovych for allegedly discussing the prospects of Our Ukraine’s joining the coalition. “Such reports – this is a slander, it has nothing to do with reality,” she underscored.

As UKRINFORM reported, a member of the Our Ukraine party Yuriy Yekhanurov earlier expressed a view that the party this autumn may join the parliamentary coalition instead of the Communist Party.

Tymoshenko: I am ready to debate Yanukovych and Azarov

Yulia Tymoshenko says that she is ready to debate Viktor Yanukovych and Mykola Azarov, but not representatives of their inner circle.

“I am ready to debate Yanukovych and Azarov, who are deceiving the entire country, but there are other people who can debate others on an equal level,” Yulia Tymoshenko said today during a press conference in Khmelnytsky when asked why she didn’t debate Hanna Herman.

The leader of BYuT recalled that during the president elections Viktor Yanukovych refused to debate her on live television, despite the requirements of the law.

“Back then he hid so far from the debates that afterwards we couldn’t find him for three days,” she said.

Ukraine-EU suspended talks over free trade zone

Ukraine-EU suspended talks over free trade zone

Ukraine and the EU have suspended talks over a free trade zone due to a dispute over agricultural issues, the Ukrainian prime minister said in an interview with the BBC.

“A slowdown has occurred…That’s why we paid significant attention on how to break the deadlock over the disputed issues” Mykola Azarov said.

The Ukrainian premier said the main stumbling block was agriculture, as the quality of Ukrainian grain is “far higher than in Europe, believe me”.

Government to start taking "unpopular measures" in July

Government to start taking "unpopular measures" in July

Government to start taking "unpopular measures" in July

Ukrainian Vice-Premier Serhiy Tihipko has advised Ukrainians not to hurry to sell their savings in euros. He said this in an interview with the Komsomolskaya Pravda v Ukraine newspaper.

“At the consumer level, I would advise [Ukrainians] not to hurry to sell the euro. There is every reason to believe that the euro will remain at USD 1.20/EUR 1 and in time strengthen its positions. The current state of the euro will retain by the end of this year,” Tihipko said, UKRINFORM reported.

“As for Ukraine, then, of course, there are certain risks for us, because foreign trade with the euro area is over 30 percent. And European goods are currently getting advantages that could worsen our positions, because Ukrainian goods are becoming less competitive,” he added.

Asked when the government will begin to take “unpopular measures” to tackle the crisis, Tihipko said: “We will have to take certain unpopular measures next month.”

At the same time, in his opinion, “the fight against corruption, a reduction in the number of checks on businesses and other similar measures will be unpopular among officials, but they will get support among the public.”

Azarov: Ukraine's GTS will remain the property of Ukraine

Azarov: Ukraine’s GTS will remain the property of Ukraine

Gas transport system will remain the property of Ukraine. Prime Minister Mykola Azarov stressed this in an exclusive interview with the BBC Ukrainian Service that he gave while on a visit to Luxembourg.

Answering the question if “the gas pipe remains in Ukrainian hands,” Azarov said: “We have been talking openly and honestly for many years and earlier, being in power, and then in opposition, and again now: we offer the EU and also Russia to determine the amount of gas transit. Europe must give guarantees to Russia that it will buy Russian gas, and Russia must give guarantees to us that these volumes of gas will be pumped and transported via our gas transport system, not bypass transport routes that will make our system unnecessary. We should obtain such guarantees. In exchange for these assurances, we are ready to consider the participation of the EU and Russia in the management and modernization of Ukraine’s GTS.”

However, as the Prime Minister stressed, the gas transport system would remain the property of Ukraine. “I do not think it will surprise our Russian partners, because they understand that any state doesn’t want to lose such a valuable asset,” said Mykola Azarov.

In addition, Azarov noted that Ukraine despite the difficult financial situation would prevent the bankruptcy of “Naftogaz of Ukraine.”

“We won’t let Naftogaz bankrupt because it is the main company that supplies gas to Ukraine and transits Russian gas to Europe. Therefore, we’re not talking bankruptcy,” stressed the Prime Minister and added: The financial situation in Ukraine is difficult, but not so much that we allow bankruptcy of Naftogaz.”
