Ukraine remains strategic partner for EU

Ukraine remains a strategic partner for the European Union, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said at the 13th Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv on Friday, National radio reported.

He said that the EU is ready to assist Ukraine in conducting democratic reforms and implementing a number of projects, but added that Ukraine is not fulfilling in full its commitments on reforming the country. “It often seems to us that commitments on reform are only partially implemented and words are not always accompanied by action,” Barroso said.

He expressed hope that the presidential election in Ukraine would be held in a fair, democratic and transparent way. “We’ve already got used that elections in Ukraine are held in line with democratic standards,” Barroso said. Barroso also stressed the need for Ukraine to return to its cooperation with the International Monetary Fund.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, in turn, said that Ukraine’s course for Eurointegration would remain unchanged after the presidential election and that domestic political problems would be resolved. However, he said that “we also need to see political understanding from the EU that we all are politically responsible for the fact that the [Ukraine-EU] association agreement becomes a peculiar example for other countries in the region and Ukraine’s neighbors on their way to Eurointegration,” Yushchenko said.

President: Abandoning European integration course is a grave mistake

“Ukraine has never been so close to the answer to question of continuation of the European integration, as at the presidential elections of January 2010. On the other hand, Ukraine has never been so close to the edge, over which this policy is retracted”, said President Viktor Yushchenko today at joint press conference with the President of the European Council, Prime Minister of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt and the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso after the plenary meeting of the XIII Summit Ukraine – EU.

The President called the 2010 elections in Ukraine the race of two concepts: “One concept says that we should go home and that home is Europe … There is a second option, and it is backed by my key competitors; this option is to go back and live in yesterday”, he said.

Victor Yushchenko emphasized that it is “a difficult test for the Ukrainian society”. He expressed firm belief that it would be a grave mistake to abandon the European integration course.

The President stressed that his wish is that the Ukrainian nation honored freedom and the achievements of recent years. “If democracy and European choice don not win, it will be a disaster”, he said, adding that the choice in this matter is entirely in the hands of the Ukrainian nation.

President: EU still sees Ukraine as a strategic partner

The agenda of XIII Summit EU-Ukraine shows that the EU sees Ukraine as a strategic partner in solving the most pressing issues of global and regional scale, said President Viktor Yushchenko in his opening speech at the plenary session of the Summit in Kiev.

“Ukraine’s European integration aspirations will undoubtedly remain unchanged despite any internal problems”, he assured.

According to the President, Ukraine’s EU membership through signature and implementation of the Association Agreement has great political significance, serving the axis for achieving internal consensus on the reforms necessary for the country.

“We understand that today a lot depends on how quickly and efficiently Ukraine adapts its infrastructure, agriculture, energy, legislation to the European Union standards”, said the President.

At the same time, he said, Ukraine would like to see that the EU understanding how big the responsibility of the sides is in ensuring the Association Agreement was kind of an example for other countries in the region – the neighbors of Ukraine.
