NSDC: Gas supplies sources should be diversified

The National Security and Defense Council has pointed to the necessity to diversify the sources of gas supplies to Ukraine, first deputy secretary of the NSDC Stepan Havrysh said at a briefing after the meeting of the council, according to Ukrainian News.

In particular, the NSDC calls for the adjustment of gas supplies from Caspian and Middle Asian countries, participation in the projects on development of gas deposits on the territories of African and Middle East countries, and also the delivering of liquefied gas from the African and Middle East countries.

Thus, the NSDC recommends that President Viktor Yuschenko urge the Cabinet of Ministers to elaborate the program on the construction of a terminal for reception of the liquefied gas and create own production or acquire gas tankers.

The government will also be proposed to liquidate the system of cross-subsidization of certain categories of gas consumers with the simultaneous introduction of the mechanism of address monetary aid to the low-income population.

The NSDC also calls for the elaboration and endorsement of the plan of urgent measures to implement the Brussels’ agreements on the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transport system.

According to Yushchenko, the situation on gas payments is critical.

The President says that he does not see the government’s wish to reform the market.

On Thursday Poland marked a great holiday. The country celebrated 20th anniversary of the fall of the communist regime in Eastern Europe. Two decades ago Poland held its first free elections among communist countries, where “Solidarity” had won.

This year the holiday was greatly celebrated. Yesterday, in Krakow, even the famous bell rang, called Sigmund, which rings only in case of great joy or great grief. Polish Premier Donald Tusk invited the heads of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko was also among invited guests.

Krakow was the “political” center for celebration, but the main event with the participation of Polish President Lech Kachinskyi with fireworks and other things took place in Gdansk.

Immediately upon arrival from the airport Yulia Tymoshenko held a tet-a-tet meeting with Donald Tusk, then went to the castle of Vavel.

There, the European leaders attended the service in the Cathedral, and then each of them spoke from the podium in the center of the castle.

The speeches of European premiers were surprisingly similar. All rejoiced over the victory over terrorism, spoke about the crisis and the need for unification. The speech of Yulia Tymoshenko was a bit different and caused a storm of applause.

“My friend Prime Minister of Poland (Donald Tusk – Ed.) successfully overcomes all the complexities of the crisis, and I wish him success and prosperity of Poland,” she started her speech.

Yulia Tymoshenko finished her speech in Polish: “Let our solidarity live thousand years,”
that pleased the Polish public very much.

Tymoshenko repeatedly called Tusk his friend, and also thanked Lech Walensa also for contribution to the eradication of Communism, and Aleksander Kwasniewski – for the role of the lawyer of Ukraine in Europe.

In general, the celebrations were lovely and pleasant.

Lutsenko should apologise in public to Kolesnikov

Lutsenko should apologise in public to Kolesnikov

The slander, ungrounded accusations, outspoken offends and frank rudeness, which minister for internal affairs Yuriy Lutsenko ventured against the Party of Regions faction Deputy Head, one of the party leaders Boris Kolesnikov, were fairly judged by the Kyiv Court of Appeal. This Court pleaded Yuriy Lutsenko’s speeches delivered from the parliamentary tribune on April 7, 2005 invalid and hurting honor and dignity, and obliged Lutsenko and the Ministry for Internal Affairs of Ukraine to refute these statements and apologize to Boris Kolesnikov at the parliamentary tribune.

Earlier the same decree was issued by the Kyiv Pechersk Court, and today the Kyiv Court of Appeal left this decree in full.

The Party of Regions asks Volodymyr Lytvyn, the Verkhovna Rada Speaker, to ensure an immediate refutation at the parliamentary tribune of slander and offends ventured by minister Lutsenko against one of the leaders of our political force.

We resolutely point out the inadmissibility of such shameless, rough and cynical behavior, which has been constantly demonstrated against the Ukrainians and against the state by minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

Statement by Party of Regions

Tymoshenko promises to settle issue on bribes in universities

Tymoshenko promises to settle issue on bribes in universities

In the view of the fact that recently certain officials have activated talks on expediency of introduction of exactions from students of Ukrainian educational establishments, in the capacity of Prime Minister of Ukraine, the Head of Government, I wish to put an end to these discussions, goverbnment portal reported.

I will never afford anyone to take money from Ukrainian students in our country. None will obtain the right for legal racket in Ukrainian higher educational institutions, under no conditions or reasons (no matter how noble the motives seem).

At its nearest session the Government will take an imperative decision called to cease any talks concerning expediency of additional financial takings from students.

I consider this question settled here.

Nowadays education in Ukraine can hardly be considered cheap. And none has any moral rights to tighten a noose around necks of Ukrainian students who barely make both ends meet.

I strictly demand from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to immediately approve all necessary decisions to prevent any financial takings in Ukrainian educational institutions. There shouldn’t be any conferences, seminars or roundtables in this issue, we should approve the decision to avoid earning from students, which is illegal and immoral in its nature.
