President reacts on Leonid Kravchuk statement

In the interview for the Associated Press, he gave today, President Viktor Yushchenko said that it is “wrong to dig up politicians from the past to make them work on the election campaign.”. “The politicians, who use Leonid Kravchuk as their mouthpiece, are making a big mistake,” he added, presidetial press office reported.

Making comments on Leonid Kravchuk’s statement, Yushchenko said that no one would want to live in Ukraine of Kravchuk’s presidency times.

“Politician, who cares about this country, rather than about presidential election, should be stiff, professional, avoid populism and do right. It is hard to conduct such a policy, but this is my credo. I stand for the idea that in 2009 we must conduct the policy of common sense, rather than PR-campaigns. First of all this applies to the Government, the Parliament and the President,” said Yushchenko.

Lavrynovych: Early elections should be held as soon as possible

The first vice speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Lavrynovych emphasizes that the Constitution of Ukraine does not provide for the prohibition of early parliamentary elections before the presidential election, parliament’s press office reported.

“There is no prohibition. There is only a right of the president on the pre-termed dismissal of the parliament. And the president looses this right a half a year before the pre-termed presidential election,” he said.

Lavrynovych supposes that early parliamentary elections, as well early presidential one, should be held as soon as possible unless the current authorities do not want to voluntary retire.

IMF not insisting on deficit-free budget from Ukraine, vice PM says

There is very reason to hope that the IMF mission will return to Ukraine in the nearest two weeks. Vice Prime Minister Hryhoriy Nemyria stated at a press conference.

The official stressed that working and constructive discussions between the Government and the IMF are under way at the present. “And we have very reason to hope that either next week or in the following two weeks the IMF mission will return to Ukraine to complete the reconsideration of the next step,” Hryhoriy Nemyria noted.

According to him, there are no grounds to say that IMF tranche will be provided to Ukraine not as scheduled. Hryhoriy Nemyria reminded that the second stage of the IMF’s credit is scheduled for March and the third – for May.

He said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is not currently insisting on a deficit-free budget from Ukraine.

“The government is holding talks with the IMF. I can say now that the interim outcome of these discussions is the fact that the IMF is already not insisting on a deficit-free budget, as it did from the very beginning,” he said.

Nemyria said that the current deficit of 3% in the state budget for 2009 is acceptable for the IMF.

The Cabinet of Ministers called on Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to sign the draft a joint declaration between the Ukrainian government and the IMF as soon as possible.

Ukraine’s first president calls on Yushchenko to step down

Ukraine’s first president calls on Yushchenko to step down

Ukraine’s first president Leonid Kravchuk has urged the current president, Viktor Yushchenko, to step down as head of the country on Ukrainian television, RIA Novosti informed.

In a live address to Yushchenko on the Ukraina TV channel on Tuesday, Kravchuk said: “The true patriotism of a president… also means understanding the situation from within and making a responsible decision to step down. Such a step could stop the avalanche of problems, calm society and give hope for a real way out of the crisis.”

Kravchuk was elected Ukraine’s first president in 1991 with 61.6% of votes.

“Until recently I thought the presidential elections should be held according to law. But today I have a different opinion. I have seen clearly that you are not giving most of your attention to Ukraine’s problems, instead you are thinking of how to stay in power,” Kravchuk said.

The first president of the ex-Soviet republic also accused Yushchenko of betraying the nation’s confidence and support, and destroying both the government and the parliamentary coalition.

“The power has been almost destroyed. And it is impossible to overcome the crisis without the government’s effective participation,” Kravchuk said, adding that the only way out would be to hold early elections.

Parliament speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn told another TV channel on Tuesday that he did not think that early parliamentary elections would be held in Ukraine and said Kravchuk’s comments could “provoke another spiral of political confrontation in Ukraine.”

Yushchenko has been at loggerheads with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for several months as the former allies in the “orange revolution” jostle for position ahead of presidential elections due next year.

The country is struggling amid the global economic crisis and had gas supplies from Russia cut off for much of January after failing to agree a new gas contract. Although a 10-year supply agreement was signed barely a month ago, Ukraine’s state-run Naftogaz has already warned Gazprom that there may be problems paying for deliveries due to non-payment by local utility companies.
