Tymoshenko to check every powersaw shops

At the session of the Cabient Yulia Tymoshenko said that the government understands that illegal cutting down of forests is the main cause of the flood in the western regions of Ukraine. In this connection the government has decided to hold inspections of all powersaw shops in order to reveal the illegal ones.

“All unregistered powersaw shops, which uses unregistered woods will be shut down. Their owners will be fined, and criminal cases will be instituted,” the PM said, ForUm’s correspondent reported.

She informed that the state committee on forestry was charged with the job of inspecting and revealing facts of illegal cutting won of forests.

The Premier also noted that the Cabinet is working out a regulatory documentation, which is to control the cutting down of forests in the Carpathians.

Children suffered from the flood will study for free

All children, who are studying in schools, institutes and universities and who live in families suffered from the natural disaster, will be transferred from the paid form of education to the state form of payment.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at the end of the Cabinet’s session, ForUm’s correspondent reported.

“We are doing this to help the families suffered from the flood, as they need money to restore their houses,” Tymoshenko said.

Government worked out five designs of houses for the victims of the natural disaster

Design documentation for construction of houses for the victims of the natural disaster will be given free.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko said at the session of the Cabinet, ForUm’s correspondent reported.

According to her, the government has made a decision according to which there will be five designs of houses, worked out for the victims.

The Premier noted that these would be not big houses, measuring from 30 to 80 sq m.

Tymoshenko underlined that the design documentation would be delivered to the local authorities, and people would be able to choose a house design they like.

“People should choose a house and to get ready documentation for the construction free,” the Premier stressed.

"Ukraine Disaster Assistance Fund" accepting donations now

The “Ukraine Disaster Assistance Fund” has been created by the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC), Ukrainian Federation of America (UFA), Ukrainian-American Coordinating Council (UACC), U.S.-Ukraine Foundation (USUF) coalition, to raise money and in-kind support from individuals, institutions, organizations and businesses for the people, homes and villages in Western Ukraine hit in late July by what officials are calling the worst rainstorms in a century, according to an USUBC press-release.

At least 38 people including six children were killed in late July by a massive flood that hit the Vinnitsa, Trans-Carpathian, Ivano-Frankovsk, Lvov, and Chernovtsy regions. Hundreds of towns and villages were flooded, with more than 40,000 houses affected and thousands of people evacuated, officials  said. Some 655 settlements, and over 57,000 hectares of farmland were washed out by the floods. The Ivano-Frankovsk region suffered the most.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency, more than 422 miles (679 km) of highways and roads and more than 900 bridges were destroyed in the storms, leaving more than 300 towns and villages without electricity,  downing communication lines, and blocking food access routes throughout five  regions of western Ukraine.

Ukraine President & US Ambassador encourage support

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has called on international governments, organizations and businesses for major assistance.  U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, William Taylor, has encouraged U.S. businesses and individuals working in Ukraine to provide funds and in-kind donations for emergency and longer term  rebuilding assistance.

The “Ukraine Disaster Assistance Fund” coalition will meet with U.S. Ambassador Taylor in Washington on Thursday to discuss the flood damage as assessed by U.S. Embassy personal, the U.S. government response and how the U.S. private for-profit and not-for-profit sector can work together with the U.S. government and the Ukraine government to provide effective assistance.

Tymoshenko: Government team is strong and can properly respond to such challenges as disaster

Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko thanked the Government team for persevering work on liquidation of the disaster consequences in the West of Ukraine. “Such severe natural disaster has just proved that our Government team is very strong and can accept such challenges and properly respond to them,” Yulia Tymoshenko stressed at the Government sitting.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the First Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Emergencies, Minister of Defense and Minister of the Interior for them having done their best on their fronts, even impossible”. Yulia Tymoshenko also thanked the Minister of Fuel and Energy who had organized work on restoration of gas and power supply, and Minister of Transport and Communications for railway service restoration.

The Head of Government noted that all works could fail if it were not intensive, self-denying activity of the Ministry of Finance. “All finances arrive in regions; all works, all programs on overcoming the natural disaster have been financed by 100 percent,” Yulia Tymoshenko said.

Moreover, the PM thanked the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers and its chairman as well as heads of regional, district state administrations and heads of village, community and town councils.

“I want to thank the whole Government team which did its best for overcoming this natural disaster,” the head of Government noted.

Gas workers start open-ended protest action

The trade union of workers of the gas enterprises has started an open-ended protest action aimed at revision of the tariffs for transportation and supply of gas. More than 40 entreprises are taking part in the action.

“The trade union has already informed the Cabinet that in case of ignoring their demands the enterprises will cease supplying the gas consumers,” the message of the union says.

Participants are holding meetings in front of the Cabinet and Secretariat buildings in Kyiv.

“In every city of Ukraine, where the gas enterprises are located, the workers will support the protest action. The most mass actions are being held in Odesa, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Chernihiv, Vinnitsa, Uzhhorod and Mykolayv,” the message says.

In addition, the trade union informed that 15 gas enterprises have already ceased the work as a warning strike.

Free apartments for deputies will cost the state 50 milion UAH

42 Members of Ukrainian Parliament have submitted applications to receive apartments in Kyiv.

According to Delo newspaper #138 (652) of August 6, 2008, this information was received from the Verkhovna Rada bodies.

According to the information of the newspaper, to allow these applications, the state will have to allocate around 50 million hryvnias [~10 million dollars]. In line with the law On Status of Member of Parliament, any MP who has no registration in the capital of Ukraine may improve his housing conditions at the expense of state.

Besides, if, due to any reason, a lawmaker does not want to receive a flat, he/she may apply to receive a money equivalent of it. Thus, 8 lawmakers used this opportunity in the parliament of the sixth convocation.

The Verkhovna Rada office has refused to provide the newspaper with information about surnames of the lawmakers who applied to receive flats or a money compensation. Officials referred to confidentiality of this information. Besides, they also refused to disclose the date when the lawmakers will receive apartments, their precise cost, and the amount of pecuniary compensations.

As of today, an apartment in prestige districts of the Ukrainian capital, where lawmakers are usually settled, costs not less than US $2.5 thousand for a square meter. Lawmakers mostly receive three-room flats, not less than 100 square meters by average area. Thus, the purchase of apartments for 42 lawmakers in Kyiv may cost not less than 50 million hryvnias.

Ukraine surpasses cropping records

Grain crops from 75% of areas have been cropped, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko stated it at the beginning of the session of the Cabinet.

According to her, such a big grain crop has never been  achieved in Ukraine during all years of its independency.

The Prime Minister stressed that crop capacity makes 36.7 hundredweight per hectare. She noted that it was an absolute record for the last years.

According to Yulia Tymoshenko, about 33.5 million tonnes of grain. She told that as for of August 5, the area of crops destroyed by inundation in Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil Regions made 52 thousand hectares (loss made UAH 230 million).
