Yushchenko promises “many new and strange” facts in case on his poisoning

President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko promises “many new and strange” facts in the case on his poisoning.

According
to an UNIAN correspondent, he claimed this in an interview with
journalists near the Prosecutor’s General Office, were he came to give
evidence of being poisoned.

Victor Yushchenko said that, with his
presence in the prosecutor’s office, he wants to show that he is
extremely interested in completing the investigation as soon as
possible.

“I know that the prosecutor’s office has been working
on this case very actively, not for 10, and even not for 20 hours a
day. I guess we will see a logical completion of the case”, the
President said.

He stressed that, as a victim, he is ready to provide any information necessary for the Prosecutor’s General Office.

Victor
Yushchenko pointed out he knows certain information about the course of
the investigation, but would not like to unveil it today in order not
to hamper the investigation.

Asked why he had not been summoned
to interrogation for three years, and whether it may be assessed as a
sabotage of the Prosecutor’s General Office, Victor Yushchenko recalled
that he gave the first evidence as early as in 2005.

“I think
this question should be addressed to the prosecutor’s office. I want
just to stress that all the moments when my presence was necessary… I,
from my side, guarantee a punctual presence”, the President of Ukraine
said.

At the same time, Victor Yushchenko refused to forecast
when the investigation may be completed, having reiterated that he is
interested in its termination as quick as possible.

Commenting
on demand of journalists on the information that SBU ex-chief Volodymyr
Satsiuk received Russian citizenship, Victor Yushchenko said: “All of
them will be Russian citizens”.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on 5
September 2004, the Ukrainian President, being a presidential
candidate, felt ill and was hospitalized to the Viennese based
Rudolfinerhouse hospital. Physicians of the hospital stated that
Yushchenko was poisoned with dioxin.

Russia concerned about Odessa-Brody

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin believes that Odessa-Brody oil pipeline will operate in an obverse regime.

According
to the press-service of the Russian government, Putin expressed this
opinion on Monday at a session of the Russian government’s presidium,
answering to a remark of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, who
said Ukraine’s plans to start moving Caspian Sea crude oil via
Odessa-Brody in a reverse direction, to the European Union, cause
concern among Russian oil companies.

“It would be not reverse, but obverse direction”, Putin said to his deputy.

Sechin
also said Moscow would seek alternative export routes after Ukraine had
decided to change flows on its Odessa-Brody pipeline to allow Caspian
crude to flow to central Europe.

Ukraine currently uses the pipeline in the opposite direction to ship Russian crude to the Mediterranean.

As a reminder, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko last
week postponed the supplies of Caspian Sea oil via Odessa-Brody
indefinitely by banning the state oil shipper from signing oil
contracts.

Opinion: Ukraine should not end up as a source of raw materials for bioengineering companies

Till present it is not
established whether it is risky for a human organism to consume products
containing genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The head of the GMO
detection and biosecurity laboratory of
Ukraine‘s Institute of genetic engendering
Borys Sorochinsky said at the press conference in IMC media-hall.

“Those modified organisms
allowed for commercial use were created to carry out certain functions, like
fighting against plant pests or resisting certain herbicides. We use modified
soy, corn, cotton. We drink beer made of modified yeasts. GMO is our reality,
but we should remember that GMO includes very long list of organisms with
various peculiarities and potential risks,” the scientist noted.

Commenting on the GMO
situation in
Ukraine, he said that the problem of GMO
introduction in
Ukraine is of social and economic
character.

“The global market is under
division now. It is enormous money.
Ukraine must decide what it is – a consumer
of someone’s achievements or a producer of its own production. Unfortunately,
the matter now concerns not the risks for human health, but possible social and
economic risks,” he added.

Sorochinsky expressed an
opinion that
Ukraine should not turn into a source of
raw materials for foreign bioengineering companies.

“If we open this market we
must carry out active and aggressive policy to protect our interests by means
of creating our kinds of plants and using our scientists. But first of all we
must conduct an economic and social analysis to find out whether the society
accepts this and whether it is profitable for Ukraine’s economy,” he summed up.
