People’s deputy from the Party of Regions, Nestor Shufrych considers the statement of the Russian side that Ukraine’s joining MAP is one-sided withdrawal of Ukraine from the Treaty on Friendship with the Russian Federation to be too early. He stated in an interview with parliamentary journalists, the ForUm’s correspondent reports.

“The idea of Ukraine’s joining NATO is being promoted by Yushchenko, and, thankfully, he is not yet Ukraine. I want to remind that Ukraine has 46 million of citizens and only around 11 percent of them want Ukraine to join NATO. That’s why even Yushchenko can’t ignore 2/3 of citizens of Ukraine, all the more, we will not allow him to do this,” the People’s deputy explained.

According to him, the Party of Regions will not allow the dissolution of theTreaty on Friendship because of NATO.

People’s deputy from the Party of Regions, Vasyl Kyselyov is sure that proposition of the State Duma to consider the joining MAP as one-sided withdrawal of Ukraine from the Treaty on Friendship with the Russian Federation is not a blackmail. He stated in an interview with parliamentary journalists, the ForUm’s correspondent reports.

“It is a sober treatise of things,” the People’s deputy explained.

Kyselyov assured that he calmly considers this statement of Russia. “That’s why I’m sure that it will be so: if Ukraine joins NATO, the Treaty on Friendship can’t function, as there is the sixth article which states that none of the countries which signs the treaty can’t sign agreement which damages defense capability of the other side,” he emphasized.

Russian parliament to raise issue of Ukraine’s ‘unfriendly’ policies

Russia’s lower house of parliament is to bring to the attention of the country’s leadership Ukraine’s ‘unfriendly’ policies in a statement on Wednesday. RIA Novosti reports.

In the statement, the State Duma lawmakers will raise the issue of the two countries’ stormy relations and the fulfillment of the bilateral Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership signed in 1997.

“We will bring to the attention of our country’s leadership that the actions of the Ukrainian authorities, in particular, the accelerated steps toward joining the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP), are unfriendly in regard to Russia,” the head of the State Duma committee on CIS affairs, Alexei Ostrovsky said.

At a summit in Bucharest in April, NATO members decided to postpone offering Ukraine, along with Georgia, membership of MAP, but promised to review the decision in December. The ex-Soviet republics had received strong U.S. backing for their bids.

The Russian lawmaker said if Kiev took new steps toward joining the alliance at the next NATO summit then Ukraine would be responsible for bringing into question the nature and purpose of the Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership treaty.
