Marmot predicts long cold spring in Ukraine

Marmot Timka forecasts long cold spring in Ukraine this year. On Friday morning on the territory of biostation of Kharkiv national University in Zmeivsky region at presence of scientists and journalists marmot Timka was woken up but he did not come out of his “dwelling”. According to weather sayings, spring will be cold and not sunny.

Despite such forecast today Timka “was married”. Earlier he had been already “married” but his marmot run away last summer, so now he has new fiancée-marmot – Adelaida.

Prosecutor General’s Office is terrified with situation in Chernobyl zone.

Prosecutor General’s Office is not satisfied with activity of department of Interior Ministry which protects territories near Chernobyl, polluted with radionuclides. Tatyana Kornyakova deputy Prosecutor General informed today at the press conference, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

According to her, PGO workers revealed repeated violations in Chernobyl zone. “Situation in Chernobyl zone is horrible. It influences not only the situation in Kyiv but in the whole Ukraine,” she stated.

“Corresponding departments of police actually do not take any measures there. Everything is being done formally,” she added.

Baloha denies conflict between Secretariat and Cabinet

Head of the President’s Secretariat denies conflict between President’s Secretariat and government of Yulia Tymoshenko. He stated that today in an interview, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

According to him, it is very favourable for many politicians as well as politically committed political scientists and journalists to speak about some conflict between Secretariat and Cabinet.

He also noted that such talks are not new. There were already such accusations at times of Yanukovych’s government. The Secretariat just fulfills its work and it often happens so that its decisions do not satisfy the government.

President met with Justice Minister

President Viktor Yushchenko met today with Justice Minister Mykola Onishchuk, according to president’s press office.

The meeting was dedicated to anticorruption policy which was designated by the President as work priority of the Ministry for 2008.

 
In this regard V. Yushchenko and M. Onishchuk both agreed that the draft Presidential Decree “On measures aimed at improving and realization of state anticorruption policy” which resulted from joint work of the Ministry of Justice and the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine shall make state anticorruption policy more consistent. Among novelties introduced by the Decree is systematic examination of legislation which Ministry of Justice would be charged with.
 
M. Onishchuk also informed the President that anticorruption package of laws that V. Yushchenko had sent to the Verkhovna Rada was adopted in its first reading. The Minister opined that if the abovementioned law package and the Decree are implemented, anticorruption legislation would greatly benefit from them.

Ukraine will remain key transit area?

“Ukraine is a reliable transit partner,” German Ambassador to Ukraine Reinhard Schafers said in interview with newspaper “2000”, according to Cabinet press service.

He noted that Europe cannot do without Ukraine on the issue of transit deliveries in the nearest future. “Those building or planning to build pipes bypassing Ukraine must realize that it is impossible to circumvent this country in 20 years to come, as the pipelines being built will meet just the increasing demand for energy carriers,” the ambassador says.

Thus, as he put it, the bulk of oil and gas will be carried across Ukraine in the coming two decades.

Baloha admits unsteadiness of coalition

Baloha admits unsteadiness of coalition

Head of President’s Secretariat Viktor Baloha admits possibility of failure while adopting of decisions by the VRU because of insignificant advantage of coalition votes. He said that today in an interview, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

At that Baloha noted that such situation does not mean incapacity of the coalition. “Lets be realists: there is a risk of failures while adopting of decisions. But I do not state on incapacity of the coalition,” he said in particular.

According to Baloha, now effectiveness of voting in the VRU depends on every People’s deputy from the coalition and voting for PM proved it.

Answering the journalists question of possibility of coalition extension, he reminded that Constitutional majority in the parliament is formed only on the factions basis. At that he noted that PR has already announced its status of opposition. Communists are mainly at once with PR. “So only Lytvyn bloc faction can be considered as potential participant of the coalition. However any signals from Lytvyn bloc concerning consultations have not been shown from their side.

Yushchenko considers Ukraine will have interesting negotiations with Russia

Yushchenko considers Ukraine will have interesting negotiations with Russia

President Viktor Yushchenko intends to use Ukraine’s accession to the WTO for strengthening of Ukrainian positions in trade arguments with Russia. He said that in an interview with France-press.

“Considering Russia’s own aspirations to join the WTO, we will have interesting negotiations” on thorny issues such as Russian antidumping duties, Yushchenko said.

“It’s the sovereign right of every nation to set its own security policies and we are exercising this right,” Yushchenko commented on Ukraine’s intention to join Action plan on membership in NATO.

 
“It’s not a question that can be decided overnight, or in a year. It’s the subject of difficult discussions with the Ukrainian people,” said.
 
As a reminder, Yushchenko’s visit to the Russian Federation is scheduled for February 12.

Tymoshenko met with Agriculture Minister of France

Tymoshenko met with Agriculture Minister of France

Yesterday Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko held a meeting with Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of France Michel Barnier and discussed bilateral trade-economic cooperation and European integration of Ukraine, government press service reported.

Yulia Tymoshenko noted that today Ukraine has a unique chance when a President, Government and parliament coalition represent one team. The PM told Michel Barnier about key priorities of the draft Action Program of Government.

Touching upon Eurointegration Michel Barnier noted that Ukraine can always count on the support of France in this process. According to him, creation of the free trade area between Ukraine and the EU and deepening of economic cooperation are very important at this point.

Besides, he noted that Ukraine has a unique opportunity in agriculture and France is ready to render assistance in creation of necessary normative-legal basis.
