Foreign Ministry: Ukrainian checkpoints working normally

Ukrainian checkpoints working normally

Foreign Ministry: Ukrainian checkpoints working normally

Due to Christmas holidays, queues increased on Ukrainian borders, particularly, with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. “Ukrainian checkpoints are working under intensive procedure,” Kostiantyn Yeliseev, deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine, said at a news briefing in the Ministry. He also informed that Ukraine’s general consuls cross the border to monitor the situation at Slovak, Hungarian and Polish checkpoints. Government’s press service informs.

Yeliseev said that the number of problems on the border increased because of accession of new countries to the Schengen agreement. This owes to the fact that borders were removed between those countries, and thus trucks reach the border with Ukraine sooner.

The Deputy Minister said that his Ministry had initiated a meeting on the border with Ukraine’s neighbor countries that entered the Schengen zone to discuss removal of shortcomings in the border crossing procedure. Yeliseev said that this meeting of representatives of foreign ministries and border services, as well as customs and local power bodies of the two parties, was slated for January.

Still, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Andriy Deshchytsia claims there are no serious problems on Ukraine’s borders.

The State Border Service attributed long queues on Ukraine’s border with Poland, Hungary and Slovakia to more thorough checks by control services because of those countries’ accession to the Schengen agreement.
