Ukrainians want to see Tymoshenko PM

35% of Ukrainians want to see Yulia Tymoshenko a Prime Minister of Ukraine. The survey held by “Fund of public opinion – Ukraine” during 18-28 October showed such result. The general director of “FPO-Ukraine” Olexander Bukhalov said that today in Kyiv at a press conference.

According to him, acting PM Viktor Yanukovych is on the second place after Yulia Tymoshenko  . 33.5% of Ukrainians want to see him a PM.

3.1% of surveyed people would like Volodymyr Lytvyn to be a Prime Minister. Petro Symonenko got 2.3% of support, Yury Lutsenko – 2%. 9.4% of surveyed people could not give answer.

According to survey, 44.8% of people would appreciate coalition between BYuT and OU-PSD. Coalition between BYuT, OU-PSD and Lytvyn bloc would be supported by 40.7%.

25% of people would appreciate coalition between PR and OU-PSD. Coalition with participation of PR, OU-PSD and CPU would be supported by 28.3% of surveyed people.

Only 13.7 of people would support coalition between PR and BYuT.

Survey was carried out in 160 population centers of Ukraine. Two thousand of people participated in the survey.

President met with acting Interior Minister

President Viktor Yushchenko on Monday met with Mykhailo Korniyenko, Ukraine’s acting Interior Minister. They spoke about how to tackle organized crime, maintain law and order and prevent business raids and illegal land seizures.

Yushchenko instructed Korniyenko to propose a bill allowing traffic police officers to impose harsher fines on those breaking traffic rules (6,521 people have been killed in 44,700 road accidents in Ukraine this year). He also insisted that police must more actively investigate recent bank robberies in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

Ihor Pukshyn, President Yushchenko’s legal advisor, was present at the meeting, as the President’s press office reports.

CEC registered 15 People’s deputies more

On Monday the Central Election Committee has registered 15 People’s deputies, elected at the early parliamentary elections.

Thus, the quantity of the registered People’s deputies is 223.

On Monday the CEC has registered three People’s deputies from the BYuT, four People’s deputies from the OU-PSD bloc, and eight – from the CPU.

As it is known, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine numbers 450 People’s deputies.

According to the results of the early parliamentary elections, the Party of Regions will get 175 People’s deputies’ mandates, the bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko – 156, the bloc of “Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense” – 72, the Communist party – 27, the bloc of Lytvyn – 20.

People’s deputy of the fifth convocation Vasyl Volha in an interview with ForUm’s correspondent commented on unwillingness of the Party of Regions to submit the documents to the CEC for the People’s deputies’ registration now.

“The Party of Regions holds interesting and, to large extend, dramatic game on many flanks. And this game is played in all directions.” he said.

According to Volha, not registering in the CEC, the Party of Regions makes pressure on its opponents.

He has noted that the BYuT considers the variant not to submit documents for the registration.

According to the People’s deputy, if part of the People’s deputies from the BYuT and the PR refuses to take mandates, the NSDC will advise President Yushchenko to implement the direct presidential government,  which secretary of the NSDC Ivan Plyushch insists on.

Yushchenko hopes for effective changes in social policy

Yushchenko hopes for effective changes in social policy

President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko is sure that effective social policy will be held in 2008. He said that today in scope of awarding workers of social sphere. In particular, Viktor Yushchenko hopes for pension reform.

“I think 2008 will face significant changes of pension policy,” he said.

The President noted that it is necessary to implement single tariff network, to change coefficient of labour experience and to solve a range of problems, announced in President’s social initiatives.

Yushchenko noted that despite existence of many problems in social sphere, since 2005 they are being solved.

“For today it is important that we find compromise and understanding in solving of social problems,” he said adding that this gives him assurance that next year will be the most effective in reformation of social sphere.

Fuel and Energy Minister predicts growing prices for Russian nuclear fuel

Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Boyko predicts 25% growth of prices for nuclear fuel, which is bought in Russia for Ukrainian nuclear power plants, in 2008. The Cabinet’s press office reports.

Presently, the monopolist supplier of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian NPPs is the Russian company TVEL.

In compliance with the schedule, which was arranged by EnergoAtom and TVEL in 2007, in first half of 2008 fuel at all 15 Ukraine’s reactors are supposed to be refreshed.

The Party of Regions and the bloc of Lytvyn have not yet submitted documents to the Central Election Committee for the People’s deputies’ registration. The press service of the CEC informs.

At today’s CEC sitting it is planned to register four People’s deputies from the “Our Ukraine -People’s Self-Defense” bloc, three – from the BYuT, and eight – from the Communist party of Ukraine.

“The People’s deputies’ candidates must submit documents for registration to the CEC till November 16. Then for five days more the Committee can consider the documents and on November 21 the CEC must register all elected People’s deputies,” member of the CEC Olexander Okhendovsky said.

Ukraine will not be forced to join NATO

US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine William Taylor considers that it will take 1-2 years for discussion in Ukrainian society concerning necessity to join NATO. The ambassador said that today, answering the questions of students in Kyiv international university.

According to Taylor, after 1-2 years of discussion of this issue and informative campaigns, Ukrainians will clear for themselves what NATO is. After that, the government can give an application for NAATO joining.

At that Taylor noted that it does not guarantee automatically that Ukraine will join NATO, because some European countries spent years to join NATO after announcement of their wish.

However, Taylor said in case Ukrainians agree to join the Alliance, NATO will assist in this process.

The ambassador noted that Ukrainians have different opinions concerning NATO, but decision must be made not by Europe or Russia but by Ukrainians.
