Secretariat: Russia puts pressure on Ukraine

Oleksandr Shlapak, deputy head of President Victor Yushchenko’s office, held a press briefing on Thursday, President’s press office reports.Shlapak said Ukraine owed Russian gas monopoly Gazprom no money. “These are the debts of private companies, and all the sums that are being mentioned today and which have caused great confusion concern the relationship between these companies,” he said. “To my mind, the tone of [Gazprom’s] statement and the time when it was made show that Gazprom wants to see more than just a problem facing private companies in these payments. We regard it as a kind of political pressure on Ukraine in this difficult period of forming our country’s new government… and also as preparations for talks on gas prices for Ukraine in 2008 and Ukraine’s services provided to Gazprom.”

Shlapak said Yushchenko had warned the Cabinet, the Energy Ministry and Naftogaz about such problems in his decree. If ithad been fulfilled, the situation would be much better, he said, criticizing the government for failing to implement it.He expressed hopes Ukraine’s next Cabinet would heed Yushchenko’s proposals.

Taylor congratulated Ukrainians on “good” elections

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the USA to Ukraine William Taylor thinks that high attendance of Ukrainian citizens at polling stations on September 30 is a good sign of democracy. Tailor stated in his podcast which is placed on official web-site of the USA Embassy in Ukraine.

“It’ is important to note that 62% of Ukrainians came out to vote, which is a very high percentage in relative turns. I note that in the United States we often have less than 60% of people vote. So this is important for Ukraine. It’s a good sign of democracy,” Taylor said.

He expressed his hope that “the parties will get together and come up with a coalition that can govern Ukraine over the next several years”. “There are issues that Ukraine must deal with right away, so we urge a quick formation of the government, and we congratulate the people of Ukraine for a very good election,” he noted.

BYuT and OU-PSD do not have strategic controversies

Deputy leader of the BYuT Mykola Tomenko assures that the bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko and the “Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense” bloc do not have any strategic controversies concerning the draft program of democratic government activity. He has stated today at the press conference, answering the question on possible controversies.

According to Tomenko, if the parliament starts its work not earlier than the middle of November, some questions on budget adoption in a short period of time may arise. “Then, of course, the question will arise: whether these or those election obligations can be realized from the first quarter of 2008 or, for example, after the first half a year 2008,” he added.

“There is no question on strategy controversies, but there are controversies of terms and realization of these or those ideas,” he added.
