Arseniy Yatsenyuk met with Ambassador of Finland to Ukraine

Foreign Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk met with Ambassador of Finland to Ukraine Laura Reinila, whose diplomatic mission in Ukraine has ended, the Foreign Ministry’s press service told.Laura Reinila noted the positive changes in the Ukrainian society during the latest four years.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk stated his gratitude for contribution of Laura Reinila into development of bipartite relations between Ukraine and Finland and thanked for support of Ukraine’s EuroIntegration bids. Arseniy Yatsenyuk wished Reilnila success in her further activity and stated his expectation the Ukrainian-Finish cooperation will remain at the high level, Cabinet’s press office informed.

International Media Forum takes place in Kyiv

International Media Forum takes place in Kyiv

The International Media Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was launched today in Kyiv at the Opera Hotel, according to the UN Office in Kyiv. The Forum, organized by the United Nations in partnership with the Expert magazine and MTS-Ukraine is held on 12-13 July 2007 to give floor for discussion on the role of media in promoting, challenging and implementing CSR, UNIAN reports.

Opening the event, Mr. Francis O’Donnell, UN Resident Coordinator to Ukraine stated, “Today, corporate social responsibility is becoming of ever greater importance in the world agenda. Media is the main driver in communicating the value of Ukraine’s engagement in CSR and is also society’s watchdog on its implementation”. “Besides, media is, in its own right, business that can promote social and environmental responsibility by observing CSR principles”, he added.

Mr. Taras Petriv, Head of the National Commission on Freedom of Speech, welcomed the participants on behalf of the President of Ukraine and read out his address.

The International Media Forum brings together more than 100 prominent journalists and editors from nine countries together with experts from the private and public sector as well as government and academia to discuss how media can reinforce the CSR development. The speakers of the Forum include Mr. Simon Derry, Regional Director for the BBC World Service Trust, Mr. Savik Shuster, Head of the new projects group TV channel “Inter”, Mr. Kevin Marsh, Editor-in-Chief, BBC College of Journalism, Ms. Ceditha Anne M. Rimando, Business Editor of Newsbreak Magazine, Mr.Alexandre Gorelik, UN Information Centre Moscow, Mr. Iskander Hisamov, Editor-in-Chief of the “Expert-Ukraine”, Kazbek Bektursunov, Head of “Kyivskiy Media Holding”.

During this two-day international event, three working group discussions and a debate session will focus on such aspects as the role of the media in CSR, and media as socially responsible businesses and frameworks enabling media to promote CSR.

The International Media Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility is conducted in the framework of the UN Global Compact that was successfully launched in Ukraine in April 2006.

As of today, 72 Ukrainian companies have signed the UN Global Compact. By joining this initiative, the companies are committed to observe ten principles including addressing corruption and labour discrimination, promoting sustainable environment and protecting human rights. Globally, 3800 companies from 100 countries worldwide signed the UN Global Compact.

Secretariat regrets Bogatyryova resignation

Deputy head of the President’s secretariat Olexander Shlapak regrets that the PR faction leader Raisa Bogatyryova resigned from president of Tender chamber position. He said that today at the briefing in Kyiv, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

He noted that he regrets that in such moments we will not be able to get support from such competent people as Raisa Bogatyryova concerning fulfillment of the President’s decree and NSDC decision on regulation those problems around state purchases,” he noted.

He agrees with Bogatyryova that it is necessary to unite efforts of those who can influence on process to resolve it.

He also stated that Yushchenko and NSDC put great expectations on Tender chamber concerning regulation of problems around state purchases.

Yushchenko charged Government to regulate problems concerning state purchase

The Government has not submitted to NSDC its propositions concerning new draft law on state purchases. The deputy head of the President’s Secretariat Olexander Shlapak said that today at the briefing in Kyiv, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

He reminded that for recent years this law was changed several times, but every next law was worse than the previous one.

He informed that Yushchenko and Yanukovych offered their variant of resolving this situation, in particular to hold NSDC session for regulation of the problem.

Shlapak reminded that NSDC worked out draft bill on state purchases and President put this decision into force by his decree on Thursday. “The President demands the government to prepare changes to this draft bill and to hold in-depth discussion of these initiatives,” he said.

Moreover, Yushchenko charged PGO, SBU, Interior Ministry and Antimonopoly committee to carry out control and check the system of state purchases in general.

President stresses on Budget 2008

President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko expressed his wish concerning budget 2008. The deputy head of the President’s Secretariat Olexander Shlapak said that today at the briefing in Kyiv, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

According to Shlapak, Yushchenko wants his social initiatives to be taken into account of the Budget 2008. He also insists on regulation of those problems arisen during consideration budget 2007.

In his letter to the PM Yushchenko advises the Government to count attentively nominal GDP for the next year once more.

Moreover, Yushchenko insists on budget deficit to comprise no more that 2% from GDP.

Shlapak also informed that the President paid Cabinet attention to necessity of living wage increase.

Government prepares new anti-inflation measures

The Ukrainian Government is engaged in preparation of new anti-inflation measures for keeping inflation within the 2007 forecast, the Economics Ministry reported.

Soon, the list of actions for the second half of 2007 will be drafted, with a view of adhering to the predicted performance of the 2007 budget.

Considering unfavorable weather conditions in the agro-industrial complex, the Cabinet of Ministers will pass relevant decisions on the food market.

In the first half of 2007 inflation in Ukraine reached 4.2%. While drafting the 2007 budget and Government proceeded from 7.5% inflation forecast, Cabinet’s press office informed.

Ukrainian rusyns are not confessed as nationality

The legislation of Ukraine doesn’t allow Trans-Carpathian rusyns to be a separate nationality. Head of State’s committee on nationality and religion Georgiy Popov sated at a press conference in Kyiv.

“As the Head of the State organ I answer that it is not defined in our Ukrainian legislation who and in what way establishes nationality,” he said.

At the same time, Popov said that rusyns can obtain the status of ethnic minority. “If next general census of population occurs, than we will decide. We have no other mechanisms,” he said.

Popov didn’t note when next population census will be.

As a reminder, earlier Ukrainian ombudsman Nina Korpachova had addressed to the Government with a request to confess rusyns as separate nationality.

Rusyns, who live in Trans-Carpathian, from the moment of formation of independent Ukraine, have been trying to obtain the confession of their nationality.

CEC cant hold early elections?

The CEC member Olexander Chupakhin considers that the CEC cant hold early parliamentary elections in Ukraine because there is no President’s decree on VRU dissolution.

“I have not seen either decision or decree of the President on VRU dissolution. I dont have any grounds to speak that early elections will be held in Ukraine,” he said today in Kyiv at the round table “Technology peculiarities of early parliamentary elections in Ukraine. However, he noted that it is his own position, but not of the whole CEC.

According to him, even taking into consideration the President’s decree on elections on September 30, term of 60 days, dedicated for elections conduct, expires on August 5. September 30 is 120 days term that is given for ordinary elections conduct.

He also noted that there may be problems with formation of district election commissions that are formed from representatives of parliamentary factions. According to him, as People’s deputies of BYuT and OU have resigned, their leaders cant sign documents on delegation of representatives to election commissions.

President signed some decrees of VRU dissolution. Later they were cancelled. By his last decree the President appoints elections on September 30, but this decree has nothing with VRU dissolution.
