Sport Minister “declares war” to tobacco and alcohol advertising

The Minister for family, youth and sport Viktor Korzh calls upon the mass media to refrain from advertising of alcohol and tobacco production during sport programs. He told today at the press conference at the Cabinet of Ukraine.

“It is pity that TV and radio channels broadcast advertising, in particular within support of Ukrainian sport. I declare that none of producers of alcohol production has any support program for Ukrainian sport,” Korzh said.

The Minister considers the mass media follows “irresponsible producers.”

Being a people’s deputy, he addressed the producers of alcohol productions to provide for assistance to the Ukrainian sport.

Ukraine President meets Polish leader

Ukraine President meets Polish leader

Victor Yushchenko met with Polish President Lech Kaczynski for
talks on Wednesday, president’s press offic.

The two leaders spoke about regional and European issues,
especially how to develop Ukraine’s ties with Poland.

They agreed to hold an energy summit in May. Mr. Kaczynski
described the project to extend the Odesa-Brody oil pipeline westwards to the
Polish city of Plock as a “key project” for his country.  He also supported
plans to create a pipeline energy corridor connecting Asia and Europe.

The Ukrainian leader suggested that the two countries jointly
formulate a short-term bilateral plan on energy security and cooperation to join
the European Union and NATO, and a plan aimed at developing border
infrastructure and unifying customs rules.  

Speaking about humanitarian cooperation, Mr. Yushchenko and Mr.
Kaczynski agreed to open a permanent Ukrainian exhibition at the
Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and to continue renewing historic sites in
both countries.

The two leaders also discussed Ukraine and Poland’s bid to host
the Euro 2012.

EU to allocate EUR 500 million to Ukraine

EU to allocate EUR 500 million to Ukraine

The European committee will provide Ukraine for financial assistance in amount of EUR 494 million within the European neighborhood policy during 2007-2010.

According to the press office of the European committee, official announcement on assistance will take place tomorrow in Brussels during the meeting of the EU commissioner on foreign affairs and the European neighborhood policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner with the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko.

Funds are expected to be spent on support of the implementation of the Memorandum between Ukraine and the EU on cooperation in energy sphere, strengthening of possibilities of Ukraine in migration management and border security, improvement of independence and effectiveness of judicial power and office prosecutor and also efforts support on problems with climate changes.

Moreover, Ukraine will be take advantage of funds of the Investment fund of neighborhood, the European investment bank and the European bank for development and reconstruction.

During 2004-2006 the EU assistance for Ukraine made EUR 212 million.

Slovakia PM: Ukraine needs EU membership more that NATO’s one

Slovakia supports in full measure Ukraine’s
interests as regards accession into the European Union. Prime Minister of
Slovakia Robert Fico told Wednesday.

“Slovakia is an illustrative example of that
membership in the European Union can be useful. We want to wish every country such
opportunities of development. And we wish Ukraine to be able to meet all terms
for accession into the EU,” Fico told in an interview to “Glavred” newspaper.

As for the NATO, Slovakia is interested in being worthy
member of this organization, Fico noted.

“Speaking about helping Ukraine, I’d like to mention
that Slovakia Embassy in Kyiv will become the so-called contact embassy for
NATO. We cannot interfere in your internal affairs, but are ready to help with
information. But I think that priority for Ukraine is integration into the EU,
but not NATO,” Slovakia PM stated.

Ukraine predicts to attract UAH 37 milliard for championship Euro-2012 conduct

The Minister for family, youth and sport Viktor Korzh declares that measures for Ukraine’s participation in tender for conduct Europe football championship in 2012 will allow attracting UAH 37 milliard in infrastructure development. He told today at the press conference in the Cabinet of Ukraine.

“We hope Ukraine and Poland will win the tender. All know that it is important not only for funs but first of al for the whole country, because it is not only sport and healthy life-style popularization but also impulse for economy development,” he said.

The Minister noted that UAH 37 milliard will be attracted for infrastructure development of roads and railways, airport development and other service infrastructure.

According to him, the Government approved draft bill Euro-2012 and in the near future it will be submitted for consideration in the VR. “The draft bill regulates all arrangement and legal principles of activity of state and private institutions on preparations of this important activity,” Korzh noted.

Moreover Korzh informed that today the Government approved complex of technical and organization measures for participation of Ukraine in tender on for conduct Europe football championship.

According to the Minister, the main competitor of Ukraine and Poland is Italy that has full infrastructure for championship conduct. “We are trying to do all possible to win and we have real opportunities,” he stressed.

As a reminder, On June 25, 2005 Ukraine and Poland together applied for participation in tender for conduct of final part of championship of Europe 2012 in Ukraine.

The USA is disappointed with the rate of Ukrainian corruption

The
State Department of the USA states the spreading of corruption and violation of
women and children rights in Ukraine. It was said in the State Department
annual report about human rights in certain countries.

The
Ukrainian corruption spreads over all branches of power. Besides, Ukrainians
show racial impatience, violation of women and children rights, and local
police often use torture and blackmail, the report points.

There
are many cases of bribes within judicial system and police. Besides, the
authors of this report note that corruption can be also observed in high
schools.

There
are many cases of antisemitism and discrimination of Afro-Americans in Ukraine.
Besides, it was said that 70% of Ukrainian women became a victim of domestic
violence, some of them can be exposed to sexual harassing by their co-wokers.
However, women get less salary than men.

The
USA points out sexual exploitation of children, particulary children
prostitution, as one of the most important issue in Ukraine.

According
to this report, absence of motivated murders and arrests, successful
Parliamentary elections, absence of political pursuit or government pressure on
mass media and improvement of conditions of prisons were marked as good
tendency in Ukraine.

Ukraine President arrived in Plock

Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski welcomed Victor Yushchenko for talks
on Wednesday, president’s press office reported.

The Ukrainian leader was honored with a ceremony that included national
anthems of both countries and an honor guard.

Mr. Yushchenko and Mr. Kaczynski are now meeting one-on-one. They are
expected to attend a presentation of the Odesa-Brody-Plock oil pipeline project.

Yanukovych intends to increase GDP growth

Yanukovych intends to increase GDP growth

The Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych considers that Ukraine should follow the world leaders on GDP growth rate. He told today at the Cabinet’s session, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

“Ukraine should define its way for development and priorities. We will attract advisories who has essential experience in the world and who overcame reforms in the most success countries,” the PM said.

According to him, such countries are Finland, Singapore and Australia.

“We are not satisfied with the European GDP growth of 3%. We should have not less that 7-8%. Than we will gradually catch up with the living standard, increase social standards and strive for the world level,” the PM noted, adding that Ukraine has significant potential on this question.

Yanukovych charged the vice PM Mykola Azarov to complete necessary documents preparation to start public discussion on this question at the end of March.
