Ukraine seeks new energy cooperation

Ukraine seeks new energy cooperation

Ukraine’s strategically important gas transport system is our
national asset and cannot be given to any foreign country, Secretariat Chief of
Staff Viktor Baloha told a press conference on Wednesday.

He said the government would never exchange a stake of the gas
transport network for a chance to explore gas fields abroad but added that Kyiv
was ready to consider proposals on international energy cooperation.

“Ukraine wants to use its gas transport system and transit
capabilities as effectively as possible,” he said, adding that the cabinet must
carefully analyze Russia’s proposals to use Ukraine’s capabilities.

Baloha said he had discussed the issue with Prime Minister
Yanukovych, whose cabinet has to submit their proposals to the President by the
end of the day.

“These proposals should be considered by experts and approved
by the National Security Council,” he said.

As energy dependent country, Ukraine is interested in
diversifying energy supplies, which is one of the components of our energy
independence, he said.

“Ukraine must search for new ways of building international
energy relations, including forging closer ties with Russia.”

Victor Yushchenko has sent a letter to Prime Minister Viktor
Yanukovych with a request to take measures to dub or subtitle foreign films for
Ukrainian-speaking audiences, president’s press office reported.

“To promote the national language in Ukraine’s social life and
to implement balanced language policies, I would like to ask you to take
measures to bring the current procedures of distribution and demonstration of
foreign films in Ukraine in line with the Law on Cinematography,” he said.

The President is worried the Kyiv Economic Court of Appeal
cancelled paragraphs 2, 3 and 12 of item 2 of the January 16/2006 governmental
resolution ensuring that the Law on Cinematography is observed. He believes the
decision violates the rights of Ukrainian-speaking audiences.

Baloha comments on “Our Ukraine” and BYuT unity

“Our Ukraine and BYuT should be together. The Head of the Secretariat of the President Viktor Baloha told today at the briefing, the ForUm’s correspondent reported.

“Meeting with BYuT faction confirms unity of “Our Ukraine”, and we should be together and to present oppositional forces with Yulia Tymoshenko in the Parliament,” he said.

Baloha also denies that fact of disagreement in “Our Ukraine” concerning cooperation with BYuT. “We do not have any disagreements. After all, everyone in “Our Ukraine” can express his position and opinion,” he noted.

The Head of the Secretariat of the President reminded the journalists that “Our Ukraine” declared about its opposition as far back as at the conference. “That’s why unity with another opposition force in the Parliament is logical,” he stressed.

It’s up to Ukraine, whether to join NATO or not, William Taylor says

It’s up to Ukraine
whether to join NATO or not, but not the USA, or any other country, US
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor told the
roundtable “EuroAtlantic integration of Ukraine Under New Internal
Policy”, Cabinet press office reported.

According to William

is the one of Ukrainians, but not Americans, Europeans or Russians”, he
stressed. The US Ambassador to Ukraine confirmed NATO’s doors remain open for
all new members, as it was stated at a NATO summit in Riga. NATO’s membership
is possible for Ukraine, in case it seeks it, William Taylor stressed.

The US Ambassador to
Ukraine noted countries, which have recently become full-fledged members of
NATO have a very useful experience for Ukraine.

In turn, Czech
Ambassador to Ukraine Karel Stindl opined the referendum on Ukraine’s accession into NATO is a non-sense, as the society is not in charge of Ukraine’s security.
