In 2006 over 80 charitable organizations and foundations created in Ukraine

During 2006 over 80 charitable organizations and foundations were created in Ukraine, 50 of which have international status and over 30 have all-Ukrainian status, “Cabinet press office” reported. This is almost one tenth of all Maecenas organizations, having been registered by the justice bodies since 1991.

According to Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych, these mainly were directed at charitable activities.

Several Maecenas organizations stated their desire to promote development of the fuel and energy enterprises, stock market.

Ukraine's President approved moratorium on sale of farmland

Ukraine’s President approved moratorium on sale of farmland

President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko has signed the
law to extend the moratorium on sale of farmland, press office of the President
reported.

The President has signed the law of December 19 “On
changes to Land Code of Ukraine concerning imposing moratorium on sale of
farmland till necessary laws are adopted”.

The law comes into force from the day of its signing.

At the same time Yushchenko addressed the Verkhovna
Rada with a letter, in which he called the deputies “to speed up efforts on
adoption laws on state land cadastre and land market in order to lift
moratorium on free circulation of land from January 1, 2008.”

Moroz: Coalition will live till 2011

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr
Moroz is convinced that coalition of Party of Regions, Socialist party and
Communist party will last out till the next parliamentary elections.

“Coalition will be stable till 2011, the next
parliamentary elections,” he said.

Moroz considers that the coalition will extend and may
number 300 deputies, what makes constitutional majority of the parliament, “Novosti-Ukraina”
reports.

According to the speaker, the coalition will enlarge due
to deputies from opposition factions of Our Ukraine and BYuT blocs. “They have
a lot pragmatic people, who want to work for the state, “he said.

Yekhanurov comments on privatization law

Yekhanurov comments on privatization law

The people’s deputy of Ukraine, a member of “Our Ukraine” Yury Yekhanurov considers today’s voting of the deputies for bill of Ukraine “On objects list of state property right, being subject to privatization in 2007” with President’s amendments reasonable. He told journalists, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

“It is a real example of cooperation… If we do not think how to put a spoke in each other wheel, but to think about the country, it will be better,” he said.

He noted that number of privatization objects has increased now. “It allows the State Property Fund to fulfill privatization plan, charged for this year,” Yekhanurov added.

Answering the journalists’ question when privatization of “Ukrtelecom” and “Odessa port plant” is possible, he noted: “Significant preparation is needed. It is early to speak about it. Maybe it will be by the end of the current year, not early.”

Ukraine’s President to appeal to CC on farmland issue

President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko intends to
appeal to the Constitutional Court concerning overriding his veto on law to
extend moratorium on sale of farmland till 2008.

“I will use my right to appeal to the Constitutional
Court with a request to recognize this decision (overriding the veto -ed.)
invalid,” Yushchenko told journalists in the course of his visit to Luhansk
region.

“Veto I imposed was an attempt to warn the parliament against
the decision it made,” the President underlined.

Yushchenko also reminded that the thesis on cancellation
of moratorium on sale of farmland is registered in National Unity Pact.

Ukraine’s President visits Alchevsk Steel Mill

During his working visit to Luhansk region Victor Yushchenko visited the Alchevsk Steel Mill, president’s press office reported.

Serhiy Taruta, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Industrial
Union of Donbass (ISD), outlined a plan to reequip the mill. They are going to
replace outdated machines, introduce new technologies, open new departments, cut
production costs and also implement large-scale environmental and social
projects. The seven-year program was launched in 2003 after ISD signed a
two-billion-dollar memorandum with Duferko and Voest Alpine.

The Alchevsk Steel Mill is expected to double its output by
2009 and create new jobs. They are also going to invest 20% of their profits in
environmental security, hoping to considerably reduce emissions. UAH 3.5 bln
will be spent to reequip the mill in 2007. 

ASM Director General Taras Shevchenko showed the President
around the site.

Kyiv mayor opened hospital for homeless people

Special medical department for homeless people has been
opened in Kyiv on the basis of the first Kyiv city hospital, deputy mayor Irena
Kilchitska told journalists at a briefing.

She reminded that from December 1, 2006 social patrols
started to work in Kyiv, which render necessary assistance to homeless people.
Doctors are included into patrols as well.

Kilchitska also reported that social patrols give food
to homeless people and send them to shelters – there are some rehabilitation centers
in Kyiv and Kyiv region.

Semenyuk promises to sell “Ukrtelecom” transparently

The Head of the State Property Fund Valentyna Semenyuk considers the State can get much more funds for “Ukrtelecom” privatization than funds gained for “Kryvorizhstal” privatization. She told the parliamentary journalists, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

Semenyuk noted that except “Ukratelecom” some more interesting objects will be displayed for privatization like aviation, chemical and machinery construction enterprises. Much will depend on support, including mass media and transparent live broadcast. The State Property Fund will arrange it. The main objective of the Fund is the open, transparent privatization.

Answering the journalists’ question how much one can get for “Ukrtelecom” and “Odessa port plant” sale, she said: “It depends on international level and international stock markets…We should follow both home and foreign markets.”

According to Semenyuk, The Cabinet of Ukraine will approve plan and schedule of privatization of the state objects.
