President of Ukraine meets Mikhail Fridman

Victor Yushchenko has met with Mikhail Fridman, Chairman of the Alfa Group Supervisory Board of Directors.

They discussed plans of the Alfa GroupConsortium to open its affiliates in our country and cooperate with the National Bank of Ukraine. They also spoke about humanitarian issues, particularly the Art Arsenal museum project, which is being carried out under President Yushchenko’s patronage.

Mr. Fridman, one of Russia’s wealthiest oil and telecommunications tycoons, was born in the city of Lviv and so they also discussed this week’s celebrations of the 750th anniversary of Ukraine’s western capital.

Russian and Ukrainian Foreign Departments held negotiations

Russian and Ukrainian Foreign Departments held negotiations

On September 26 – 27, 2006 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, a regular round of negotiations on consular and legal issues between the delegations of Ukraine and the Russian Federation was held.
 
From Ukraine in the consultations, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the State Tax Service Administration took part, the Ukraine Foreign Ministry press service informs.
 

In the course of the negotiations, that was held in a friendly and constructive atmosphere, the participants demonstrated satisfaction with positive dynamics of bilateral relations in the consular sphere.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The participants of the consultations discussed practical implementation of the provisions of the Ukrainian-Russian Consular Convention and the Agreement on the Procedure of Crossing the Ukrainian-Russian Frontier by Residents of the Boundary Regions of Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The parties unformed each other of the state of preparation and conclusion of the Agreement on Readmission and confirmed their readiness to make maximum efforts in order to sign the Agreement in nearest future.
 
During the negotiations, the issue of updating the list of documents valid for crossing the Ukrainian-Russian frontier was elaborated in detail. For the purpose of further development of the contractual and legal base in the sphere of consular relations, the parties discussed preparation of the text of the bilateral agreement aimed at settlement of the issues of simplified procedure of changing citizenship.
 

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The parties agreed upon holding the next round of the negotiations in the first half 2007 in Moscow.

Kyiv will have its anthem

Kyiv will have its anthem

The Kyiv city council decided to conduct a contest on writing an anthem of the Kyiv city.

The contest will be held till May 1, 2007 and then considered by deputies of the Kyiv city council.

The decision was made on the council’s session for regulating of use of the capital’s symbolism.

Transport Ministry to equip Ukrainian airlines with Ukrainian-made airplanes

The Ukrainian Transport and Communications Ministry intends to equip Ukrainian airlines with Ukrainian-made airplanes over the next few years, Transport and Communications Minister Mykola Rudkivskyi said during a visit to the Kyiv-based Aviant aircraft production association.

In this context, he said that the certification of the An-148 airplane was nearing successful completion and that this would allow its serial production to commence.

German opposition speaks up for Ukraine’s open perspective of membership in the EU

Perspective of membership in the EU must remain open for Ukraine, Chairperson of the Union 90/Greens faction in German Bundestag Renate Kuenast said, as it was reported from Berlin, Cabinet’s press office reported.

According to an initiative of the Greens Party, which is the fourth biggest faction in the German Parliament and stands in opposition to the Government in office, the German – Ukrainian symposium “Ukraine after the elections: new authority and European perspective” was held in Bundestag.

As Renate Kuenast stressed, they are interested in EU doors remain open to Ukraine. The opposition faction head criticized a statement by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said the EU should not launch talks on accession of new members. In Kuenast’s opinion, Ukraine needs positive signals from Brussels to confidently move toward “European goal” through reformation.

EU-funded demo project to be held in Kvasovo village, Zakarpatye

According to the latest press release, official closure of the demonstration project in the frame of the EU-funded project “Flood Risk Assesment and Management in Zakarpastka Oblast, Ukraine” will take place on 28th of September at 15:00 in Kvasovo village, Beregivsky rayon, Zakarpatska Oblast. Memorial sign for those, who suffered from floods and those, who worked on prevention of floods, will be established at the newly constructed dam.

The EU experts decided to implement demonstration project in Kvasovo due to the fact that the village was one of the most flooded settlements in Zakarpatya in November 1998 and March 2001. During floods the village was flooded from the side of Borzhava River due to over-flow of water via dam, water filtration through the dam and flowing of water over the motorway (Lenina St.).

Works of sub-contractors were done according to the contract with the contracting party (consortium), leaded by ARCADIS EUROCONSULT (Netherlands). Sub-contractors, Khust PMK – 77 and Vinogravid PMK- 240, were selected on open tender basis. The execution of flood protection construction lasted from April 1 till September 28, 2006. Total cost of the works amounted to 1 mln of UAH.

Flood protection activities and constructions in Kvasovo village included heightening of right side “village” dike, construction of the dike to avoid flooding of the school area, construction of concrete protection wall, heightening of the bridge via Borzhava river, reconstruction of drainage system of the village, construction of the place for portable pumps and purchase of the pumping stations.

The EU-funded project proved to be a big contribution to the village protection against catastrophic floods.

Policeman is accused of bribetaking

Pervomaysk Prosecutor’s Office (Dnipropetrovs’k region) has delivered to court for consideration a criminal case instituted against an officer of the criminal investigation department of the Pervomaysk City interior Department. He is accused of bribe demand and bribetaking ($100) for non-bringing to account a Prevomaysk dweller.

Dnipropetrovs’k Prosecutor’s Office pres service has revealed it. The police lieutenant has been dismissed.

According to the part 1, article 368 of the Penal Code of Ukraine, he is facing fine or imprisonment for the period of 2-5 years.

Memorandum on partnership between Ministry for Agrarian Policy and grain-traders signed

Meeting held by Vice Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev resulted in signing Memorandum on partnership between the Ministry for Agrarian Policy and professional organizations, operating in grain market, Cabinet’s press office reported.

During the meeting it was emphasized, that nowadays the whole world faces the period of underproduction of bread-grain which leads to noticeable increase of prices in the world market and, consequently, in the home market of Ukraine. “We have to clearly understand that position of the Government on the whole is every possible support for increase of export volumes and reaching positive balance in foreign trade, but at the same time we should keep primary the task to guarantee safety of country’s foodstuffs,” Andriy Klyuyev claimed.

Touching upon the situation, which appears in 2006-2007 marketing year, the participants to the meeting informed that grain production is predicted to yield 35.3 mln tons, where wheat totals up to 14.3 mln tons, out of which food wheat production equals 9 mln tons. According to all-Ukrainian association of bakers, enterprises of baking industry need total of 5 mln tons of food-grain in the present marketing year.

Memorandum on partnership between the Ministry for Agrarian Policy and professional organizations, operating on grain market was signed by the Minister for Agrarian Policy Yuri Melnyk and president of grain association Volodymyr Klymenko. This document contains definite mechanisms of interaction of grain market participants, exchange of information, monitoring of grain market.

Vice Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev stated his confidence that the present meeting and signing the Memorandum “will become the next step in the development of agrarian market and formation of firm base of interaction as well as effective methods of cooperation between businessmen and state structures of the agroindustrial complex.” In addition, he promised that “Government will control execution of the signed Memorandum on partnership with grain-traders in the grain market.”
