PM Yanukovich specified the Cabinet’s goals

Fight against corruption is a priority task for the Government, said Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych while opening Cabinet of Ministers’ session on September 13.

Prime Minister opined that every reform must be aimed at effective and transparent use of budget money. Officials have to take this in mind handling the system of state purchase, spending funds, the Cabinet press office reports.

“All the points, we will discuss during today’s Meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers starting with the Budget draft, 2007 Government Action Program, must be aimed at increase of economy level and living standards,” emphasized Viktor Yanukovych addressing the officials.

Ukrainian and European officials addressed cooperation on Ukrainian – Moldovan frontier

The Administration of the State Frontier Service of Ukraine hosted a meeting of Service chiefs with a delegation of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Ukraine. Ukrainian representatives headed by acting Director of the State Border Protection Department Victor Nazarenko and the EUBAM delegation was led by Mission Head, General Ferenc Banfi held talks.

The meeting focused on the efficiency of the EU Border Assistance Mission, which has been operating on the Ukrainian – Moldovan borderline since December 2005, as well as grounds for its further cooperation with the Ukrainian Frontier Service, particularly, in data exchange as for passenger and cargo flows across the borderline and technical re-equipment of frontier units. The meeting also dealt with illegal migration and trafficking in humans-related issues, the Cabinet press office informed.

The World Bank considers $700-million allotment for Ukraine’s projects

The World Bank considers prospects of to launch several projects in Ukraine with $700 million of total amount. WB Representative in Ukraine Dushan Vuyovich revealed it on Tuesday at a press conference.

Among the priority projects, Vuyovich called water supply projects, electroenergetics, two environmental projects, Kyiv central heating, court system reformation of Ukraine and others.

According to Mr Vuyovich’s words, since 1992 in Ukraine the WB has approved of credits in the total amount of $4.6 milliard. $3.2 milliard out of this sum has been spent, $1 milliard has not been allotted yet, and the rest of the sum is suspended or terminated projects. 85% of the total number of credits made structural credits and 15% investment ones.

By WB experts’ calculations, Ukraine’s GDP growth will make 5.5% and the inflation – less than 5%.

Mr Vuyovich stressed that current low level of the state debt against the Ukraine’s GDP makes appropriate for the country to actively attract new WB credits for purposes of the structural reforms implementation.

Ex-Speaker Lytvin may join the opposition

Ex-Speaker Lytvin may join the opposition

Lytvin’s People’s Party decided to join the opposition.

Such decision was passed at Party’s meeting on Tuesday, the party press office informs.

Lytvin’s Party intends to address other political forces which programs coincided with the People’s Party for purpose of cooperation and consolidation.

As a reminder, at the March parliamentary elections People’s Party along with Ukrainian Selyanska Party and All-Ukrainian Left Union “Justice” was included in Lytvyn’s National Bloc and got 2.44% of votes.

Ukraine and the Eu to address the visa regime and repatriation issues

Ukraine is ready to negotiate with the European Commission on finalizing the agreements on visa regime simplification and repatriation and to prepare them for initialling at the Eu-Ukraine summit on October 27 in Helsinki, Finland. The existing agreement was reached between Ukrainian and European Commission experts, according to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s press service.

The Ukrainian side proposed the European Commission compromise approaches in two articles of the readmission agreement, which remain unregulated. The European Commission is supposed to introduce a special program of material-technical aid to Ukraine in implementation of the readmission agreement.

Ukraine’s Ministers have been unseated

One of the most important issues settled by the Verkhovna Rada yesterday was voting for revocation of power from the MPs dual job holders. VR Regulations Committee Head Oleksandr Yefremov reported on the subject before the deputies.

Mykola Azarov, Vasyl Dzharty, Andriy Klyuyev, Volodymyr Kozak, Stanislav Nikolayenko, Yuri Pavlenko, Volodymyr Rybak, Mykola Rud’kovskyi, Valentyna Semenyuk, Borys Tarasyuk, Serhiy Tulub and Victor Yanukovich have been unseated by the majority of votes.

As Yefremov informed, Justice Minister Roman Zvarych did not submitted an application on revocation of power. The VR Regulations Committee recommended VR Speaker Moroz to assume corresponding measures in this connection: to bring an action against Justice Minister and not to pay MP’s salary th him.

President of Ukraine meets Katalin Szili

Victor Yushchenko has met with Katalin Szili, Speaker of Hungary’s National Assembly.

They discussed bilateral relations, particularly in the context of Ukraine’s ambition to join the European Union.

“We understand that this path is challenging and we find it important to have partners on it,” he said.

Ms. Szili assured him that her country would help Ukraine sign a 2007 associated membership agreement with the EU. Then they discussed ways to unify customs and tariff policies between the two countries and prospects of signing a free trade agreement.

“We must carry out policies of the rapid transition to free trade,” he said.

President Yushchenko and Ms. Szili also spoke about the Hungarian President’s forthcoming visit to Ukraine. They also agreed to reequip border stations and make sure the rights of national minorities, the Hungarian community in Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora in Hungary, are protected.

Ukrainian Festival to be held in Silver Spring, MD

On September 16-17,St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Silver Spring, MD will host Ukrainian Festival. The event is sponsored by the Ukrainian Festival Committee with the support of the Ukrainian Embassy and local organizations, the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation informs.

The opening ceremony will be launched by Ecumenical Prayer led by His Eminence Archbishop Antony and greetings from the Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA Oleh Shamshur and from other dignitaries.
