58% of Ukrainian citizens’ income per a member of a family is less than the cost of living, the Social Protection Department Halyna Holeusova told Monday at the pres conference. “There are lots of components left unaccounted: lodging expense, education and so on,” opined Holeusova adding that 28.7% of Ukrainian citizens are officially declared poor.

The Trade Unions Federation of Ukraine has announced about the All-Ukrainian Protest Action which would be held on May 24. The decision to hold the protest has been caused by the tariff increase for gas and electricity passed by the National Commission Regulating the Electroenergetics on May 1, 2006.

Naftogaz on the current payment

Naftogaz Ukraine has the current debt for RosUkrEnergo gas supplied in January-February in the amount of $413.345 million, Yaroslav Dykovitsky Naftogaz Head of the Department of Economics and Price Policy acting Director of Finance and Investment, told Monday at the press conference in Kyiv.

“We pay for gas without any delay. The debt appeared when Gazprom had cancelled the payment for the Naftogaz transit services,” said Dykovitsky. It is a question of the transfer-reception of the documents, specified Naftogaz official.

Earlier, Dzerkalo Nedili reported Naftogaz owed $413,344,650 million to Gazprom and RosUkrEnergo for January-February gas supply. The sae day, Gazprom official spokesperson Sergey Kupriyanov refuted this information specifying that Naftogaz did not have debt for the natural gas supply. “It goes without saying that they (Naftogaz -edit.) cannot owe anything to us as we do not have direct supply to Ukraine – RosUkrEnergo is commissioned with it,” said Kupriyanov to Echo of Moscow.

Additional payments for every new born Ukrainian in the amount of eight thousand hryvnias, introduced by Ukraine’s President Victor Yushchenko, have not effect the birth-rate, as Veronika Zalizetska chief specialist of Department on family affairs declared during the roundtable in Kyiv.

“According to data from State statistic committee, financial help in the amount of eight thousand hryvnias has not led to expected baby boom. The index has increased from 8.7% to 9.2% only,” she said.

According to Zalizetska, population in Ukraine continues reducing.

“Ukrainian population reduces by 400 thousand people annually. Ukrainian population is getting older. Disabled part of population (women over 50, men over 60) makes 23.8% of total population. This part will increase to 38% approximately in the near future,” states the specialist of Department on family affairs.
