President wants to see Ukraine in EU and NATO

In an interview with Lithuania’s television, Victor Yushchenko has claimed that he hoped to bring Ukraine closer to the EU and NATO during his presidency, President’s press office reported.

“I would be greatly honored to fulfill this ambition,” he said, adding that Ukraine’s EU and NATO membership was also one of the big challenges facing the country’s political elite. “Today, there is no better and greater challenge for our elite.”

Yushchenko also said Ukraine would probably be invited to join a NATO membership plan at this year’s NATO summit in Riga.

Ukraine accuses Russia of retardation of solving the dispute over RF BSF

(RIA Novosty) Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister Thursday accused Russia of not wanting a swift and efficient resolution to a dispute over its naval base in Ukraine.

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet currently uses a range of naval facilities in the Crimea under a 1997 agreement that allowed Russia to continue its presence in its neighboring former Soviet republic for rent of $93 million per year.

“Unfortunately, from the time of the first meeting of the subcommittee in Kiev, we have still not moved forward in discussing the issues,” Volodymyr Ogryzko said.

The Russian-Ukrainian subcommittee met on Thursday to discuss inventory procedures for Black Sea fleet properties, the deputy minister said.

“The issue is simple – Russia is renting Ukrainian properties and territory. We propose that in order to resolve claims and suspicions, a precise inventory procedure should be carried out: All land plots and objects leased to the Black Sea fleet should be accounted for,” he said.

Ukraine believes that Russia is illegally holding more than 150 hectares, a claim disputed by Russia.

“We want practical implementation and swift work, so that all issues can be resolved as fast as possible, but for this there needs to be willingness from the Russian side, and we are counting on this willingness,” Ogryzko said.

Yushchenko: It is inexpedient to hold a NATO referendum in Ukraine now

Victor Yushchenko is convinced that Ukraine must learn to protect its security and defense interests.

“The system of economic, social, humanitarian, political, democratic, security, and defense values is an integral,” he said in Vilnius, President’s press office reported.

The President believes Ukraine has at last adopted democratic values and should now formulate mechanisms to protect them. In his opinion, society is gradually growing aware of the significance of such an approach.

Speaking about Ukraine’s NATO membership, Yushchenko said “the path to the Alliance should be understood and appreciated by the people.” He added that Ukrainians had doubted whether they should join the EU a few years ago but now “there are no discussions about which course Ukraine should support.”

The Chief of State said although Ukraine was actively cooperating with the alliance it was still going through the first stage of membership talks. Thus he thinks it is inexpedient to hold a NATO referendum in Ukraine.

“We will hold referendums. But we will hold them when we come closer to the membership issue,” he promised.

Ukrainians have become more interested in NATO, as declared Michael Dure, director of NATO center of information and documentation in Ukraine.

“We can note that a lot of people, and not only in Kyiv, but in Donetsk, Odesa, Kharkiv regions, Sevastopol and Simferopol, want to know more about NATO. And we are ready to become a source of information,” said Dure.

“If to compare this day with that one five years ago when I came to Ukraine, then people speak about NATO every day now,” added the Alliance representative.

He also noted that Ukrainian authorities had a strategy of informing the citizens about advantages of NATO membership for Ukraine. “It is rather positive that there are laws in Ukraine which regulate financing for information,” said Dure.

Yushchenko: Europe needs new energy strategy

When asked how to achieve continental energy security, Victor Yushchenko said Ukraine actively supported Europe’s intention to formulate new energy strategy.

The Head of State said the January gas crisis in Ukraine showed that “there is no country that can independently achieve energy security.” He added that any European country could face a similar crisis and so insisted that the European community should seek new ways of regional and continental energy cooperation.

“Europe does need new energy strategy,” he stated, President’s press office reported.
