Tymoshenko doubts of democratic intentions of Our Ukraine

Tymoshenko doubts of democratic intentions of Our Ukraine

In Our Ukraine bloc there are some politicians, who oppose the formation of democratic coalition, as declared Yulia Tymoshenko during a press conference.

She noted that “these guys would better eat their hands than sign a memorandum, in which our political force would have a right to form government.”

According to Tymoshenko, “certain compromised politicians have fears and phobias, but it does not mean they must become leading stars while forming the coalition.”

Tymoshenko also stressed she never hatched plots against the President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko and never took steps for his impeachment. According to her, the very team of the President arranged all these, but she did her best to “treat the President at the highest political level.”

Yulia Tymoshenko also added her eponymous election bloc would not cooperate with the pro-Russian Party of Regions.

“No mixture of political blood is possible,” Tymoshenko said, adding that there was no context for cooperation with the party led by long-time rival Viktor Yanukovich.

“We view the Party of Regions as an opposition party,” said Tymoshenko.

The former Premier said representatives of Yanukovich’s party could chair a number of committees in the new Parliament or the Audit Chamber.

Russia refuses to negotiate with Ukraine over U.S.S.R. debt

Russia refuses to negotiate with Ukraine over U.S.S.R. debt

Russia refuses to negotiate with Ukraine over U.S.S.R. debt

Russia is against negotiating with Ukraine over the debts and assets of the former Soviet Union, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday, RIA Novosty informed.

Spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said, “Russia does not intend to hold any negotiations. We consider this issue settled.”

Kamynin’s statement comes in response to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s proposal to resume negotiations on the foreign property of the former Soviet Union.

The official backed his argument citing the 1994 “zero option” agreement between Russia and former Soviet republics, which stipulates that Russia was to inherit Soviet assets abroad and the debts of former Soviet republics.

“When the Ukrainian prime minister at that time signed the agreement, Ukraine had all of the information about the size of the debts and assets of the [former] Soviet Union,” Kamynin said.

Although the agreement has been signed, it has not come into force because Ukraine, the only ex-Soviet republic to do so, failed to fulfill all the necessary internal obligations, including ratifying the document in parliament.

Russia, however, assumed all the foreign debt liabilities of the former Soviet Union.

The spokesman said Russia had been repaying the U.S.S.R.’s foreign debt, including the Ukrainian share, for 15 years but could not fully use the foreign assets of the Soviet Union because of Ukraine’s position.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Vasiliy Filipchuk said Tuesday the problem was stalled because Russia refused to offer complete information on the issue.

“We believe that the issue can only be resolved when Russia provides full and unbiased information about the debts and assets of the former Soviet Union,” Filipchuk said.

Kamynin, however, said no such obligation was included in the agreement.

“The agreement lays down no other commitments or any additional information sharing,” Kamynin said.

EP: Ukraine should get association membership in the EU

Ukraine’s recent elections were welcomed at the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg today as “exemplary.”

Speaking for the parliament’s largest faction, the right-wing People’s Party, British deputy Charles Tannock said the EU must now “reward” Ukraine, “BakuTODAY” reported.

“The European Union must collectively do more to recognize that Ukraine has demonstrated political maturity and [is] fully respecting European norms of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law — and we must now reward this irreversible process,” he said.

Tannock said Ukraine should get an “association agreement” when its current partnership and cooperation treaty with the EU expires in 2007.

EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the EU will soon offer Ukraine a “stronger and deeper agreement” with the EU, but has made it clear that the offer will not entail the promise of EU membership.
