President of Ukraine intends to reequip state borders

President of Ukraine intends to reequip state borders

At a press conference in Kyiv, Victor Yushchenko insisted that the government should reequip Ukraine’s borders. He said some of the borders were still not delimitated and reiterated that Ukraine had also failed to demarcate its border with Russia and Belarus, the President press service informed.

The Head of State said together with his Russian colleague, Vladimir Putin, they decided to formulate a plan to delimitate and demarcate the Ukrainian-Russian border. Ukraine and Belarus will also soon find ways to demarcate the border, he added.

Yushchenko said he was also negotiating the delimitation issue with Romanian President Traian Basescu.

“We are convinced that the best achievement would be to bilaterally resolve the problem,” he opined.

Then he said Ukraine had already asked the European Union to launch a project helping to modernize its western border.

“Our program is intent to actively reequip Ukrainian borders,” the President said. “We must make our borders modern and liberalize customs procedures.”

Yushchenko: Ukraine’s foreign policy will not change after elections

At a press conference in Kyiv, Victor Yushchenko assured that Ukraine’s foreign policy would not change after the March 26 parliamentary elections, President’s press office reported. He said European values corresponded to our interests most and added that “the Ukrainian nation should understand these values and follow them.”

“The European concept is intent to build a common European space but not a bipolar system in Europe,” he opined.

When asked to comment on the use of controversial issues during this year’s election campaign,  Yushchenko said this was “politically erroneous.”

“I like the idea supported by political parties in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, which agreed  not to debate discomforting issues during election battles as early as 1990s,” he said and added that such issues should be seriously discussed in society.

The agreement is vital to transparency and better control of the external border of a country that will soon be a direct neighbour of the EU.

‘The UK deeply regrets the current blockade that Transnistria has imposed along the border with Ukraine, and sincerely hopes that this disagreement can be resolved swiftly. We, with the US and EU partners, remain committed to resolving the conflict and look forward to the resumption of talks with all participants on 5 April.”

President praises Ukraine’s WTO gains

At a press conference in Kyiv, Victor Yushchenko described Ukraine’s recent achievements to join the WTO as “the greatest changes in trade policy of our country over the years of independence,” President’s press office informs.

He reiterated that the United States had eventually repealed the Jackson-Vanik amendment. Ukraine was also recognized as market economy and signed a market access agreement with the United States, he continued.

The President said the repeal of the amendment would help Ukraine sell metals, chemicals and coal in the US. Experts estimate the annual turnover rate at USD 200 mln. The signed agreement would also boost Ukraine’s export, making it grow to USD 500-600 mln.

The Head of State opined that, as market economy, Ukraine would enjoy free trade rules and “regain advantages it lost in the 1990s.”

The market status will also protect the country against billion-dollar anti-dumping sanctions, he remarked.

Yushchenko said he was happy Ukraine had signed a bilateral protocol with China. He believes it will help us build new trade relations with this country.

At a press conference in Kyiv, Victor Yushchenko said Ukraine would soon start to develop its coal industry, President’s press office reported.

“Today, we are reappraising the role of Ukraine’s coal industry in its energy balance and energy policy, and very soon we will introduce reforms ensuring the development of the sector,” he said.

The Head of State added that the government would help coal industry workers to explore new fields. They also plan to “seriously revise and diversify” property at efficient, inefficient and unprofitable mines.

The President said the industry needs new policies in order to “consolidate funds of business and government to boost the sector.”

Yushchenko also said it is important to liberalize coal prices. He opined that it was a “great economic mistake” [ not to liberalize prices ], for Ukrainian miners could not earn bigger salaries.

The President assured those present that very soon our society would witness great changes in the industry.
