Ukraine's Party of Regions on the Jackson-Vanik graduation

Ukraine’s Party of Regions on the Jackson-Vanik graduation

Yevhen Kushnaryov the Head of the Party of Regions (PR) election campaign calls the graduation of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment a kind of the US promotion for the orange power. He thinks it will not benefit Ukraine much, the PR press office informed.

“It is so touching to see how unanimous the US Senators, Congressmen, the executive power and the orange leaders were. The discredited politicians got the US promotion,” said Kushnaryov.

He reckons that it will not increase Ukrainian export to the USA. In his opinion, the decision passed on Wednesday was not a final one.

The future of the amendment’s graduation depends on the poll results, Kushnaryov told. If the results are in the orange favour, the USA will graduate it from Ukraine, he concludes.

“The USA is the shady player of the election in Ukraine. The US aim is to back discredited Maydan’s power blindly dancing to the foreign tune, by all means,” concludes Kushnaryov.

US Ambassador Herbst on the election campaign in Ukraine

Holding a press conference in Uzhhorod, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary US Ambassador in Ukraine John Herbst stated “Ukrainian authorities and Ukrainian people deserve to be praised for the first fair election campaign in the history of independent Ukraine. Now we can see ads of all candidates in the streets and on TV. The biased publications about certain candidates have not posted during this campaign.”

To hold the poll is the only thing which is left to be done. But there are some troubles with the voters’ lists and regional electoral commissions, Mr. Herbst added.

US Ambassador on behalf of the US government declared the USA will work with any government after the election. He predicted the newly elected government may consist of NSNU, BYuT and the Party of Regions representatives. The Ambassador is sure that Vitrenko’s Bloc will fail to scrape through the 3% barrier.

President addresses nuclear waste issue

Lecturing at the National University today, Victor Yushchenko urged Ukrainians to honestly and professionally find ways to store nuclear waste.

“If we want to use nuclear energy, we must learn to safely store nuclear waste,” he said, President’s press office reported.

The President reiterated that Ukraine’s four power plants currently produce 54% of electric energy but none of them has a modern depot for nuclear waste.

“We are living in times when one must address such issues. Like the two previous presidents, I can say nothing but that is not how one should respond to the challenge. We must honestly face the existing problem,” he opined.

The Head of State said sooner or later experts would have to build depots for nuclear waste.

“This issue belongs to experts who should reach understanding with society. But it should never be politicized,” Yushchenko remarked.

The President said we must distinguish betweenused nuclear fuel and nuclear waste. Fuel contains uranium and plutonium, which can be reused as energy.

“But Ukraine has to store nuclear waste here in accordance with international agreements. We cannot leave this waste in other countries,” he said.

Yushchenko reminded those present that in 2006 Ukraine would have to pay USD 120 mln to Russia for processing its used fuel, but in 2012 nuclear waste would be brought back to Ukraine. He said our government tried to solve the problem constructively and urged all to avoid “adventurous political statements.”

“There were not any unpredicted actions done by Ukraine. We treat Transdniestrian region as a part of Moldova,” said he in the interview Thursday.

Ohryzko stressed that on Ukraine’s request Moldova has simplified the procedure of issuing external economical activity permission for the Transdniestrian entrepreneurs.

In his opinion, the reasons of the problem are “the self-isolated Smirnov’s regime which is aimed at destabilization of the situation.”

Volodymyr Ohryzko supposes that the only way out is the registration of the Transdniestrian subjects in Kishinev.
